Downstream of #iGluRs!
I am super excited to share our article addressing a longstanding question in neurobiology: how Ca²⁺ signaling cascades initiated at dendritic spines operate at a distance. Check it out here: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S... @cp-cell.bsky.social.

Super paper. Temperature shock has interesting implications for structure solution in general.

Where does anti-NMDAR autoimmune encephalitis come from? Our new work suggests that ectopic NMDAR expression in tumors can trigger anti-cancer immunity, and the resulting antibodies may drive encephalitis-like symptoms. A dynamic Janowitz-Furukawa lab collaboration. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Ectopic NMDAR expression in cancer unmasks germline-encoded autoimmunity - Nature
NMDAR expression is sufficient to induce B cell recruitment and affinity maturation, resulting in receptor-modulating antibodies that connect anti-cancer immunity and autoimmunity.

🚨🧠🔬 Dopamine was discovered over a century ago, and has long been thought to only signal through metabotropic means. In our new preprint, we provide evidence that dopamine can directly signal through the "orphan" GluD ionotropic receptors.

More to come!

Now online at JCTC:
“Is the Functional Response of a Receptor Determined by the Thermodynamics of Ligand Binding?”

Our answer: Yes, it is!
And we can use it to predict ligand efficacy.

How are NMDA receptor channel conductance states regulated? We uncover a mechanism for tuning ion flow and reveal striking diversity in neurosteroid binding. Our structures captured two distinct open-channel states. A fantastic collaboration with the Traynelis lab.
