Ichthyotitan

A newly-named ichthyosaur may have been the biggest marine reptile of all time, stretching more than 80 feet long. I’ll tell you all about Ichthyotitan at NatGeo.
This 80-foot-long sea monster was the killer whale of its time
The discovery of a jawbone fossil suggests that Ichthyotitan severensis may have been the largest ichthyosaur yet known—and hunted prey much like orca.

Ichthyotitan severnensis - known from a huge partial surangular bone this Triassic ichthyosaur may have even exceeded the blue whale in length.

#paleoctober2025 day 6 : Ichthyotitan severnensis !

Triassic ichthyosaurs are quite something, having in their ranks some of the biggest marine vertebrates of all time. Althought this one is only known from partial jaw remains, it's estimated to be nearly 25m long.

These giants lived 200 MYA during the Early Triassic, hunting other marine animals as an apex predator.

In fact, these giants emerge relatively quickly (~8M years) after the first lizard thought: "I bet I could do the fish thing better than fish can."
Is Ichthyotitan the largest marine reptile yet known?

Here's Ichthyotitan vs. a human diver, based on some extrapolations of size from incomplete fossil skeletons.

Some estimates put it at 25 metres (82 ft), which technically makes it larger than an average blue whale & a contender for "largest animal ever to exist"

There's been a bit of a meme in paleoart recently, discussing drawing prehistoric animals in the same, exaggerated way cattle and other livestock were depticted in 19th century English paintings. Here is my take on Ichthyotitan, the recently named gigantic ichthyosaur 🐳 #paleoart #SciArt

Jesus. I apologise for the laziness, the situation in Indonesia is horrific. Anyway, here's a giant shastasaurid Ichthyotitan, described by Dr. @deanrlomax.bsky.social last year

older studies suggested that shastasaurids like ichthyotitan were suction-feeders, but more recent research indicates that they were active apex predators that may have hunted in a similar manner to orcas despite their enormous size

Just realised I've now modelled the (estimated) largest extinct vertebrate and invertebrate. Maybe I should make a little fella next.
