I'd store the id in a ref and check that manually and not depend on useCallback:

For option 2 it's just use an idref, they just have to be in the same tree to work rather than being direct siblings. It's possible that they should be siblingish for accessibility purposes I haven't thought about that much yet, but e.g. the input can be wrapped in a div just fine and still work.

Il n'y a pas de notice d'autorité BnF pour Robert Francis Prévost (ni Léon XIV, bien sûr) -- il y en a une dans IdRef, pour une publication en italien www.idref.fr/154719587. Donc il n'a rien écrit qui soit encore publié en français : ça ne va pas arranger les affaires de @corsimplex.bsky.social !

I feel as though the polyfill should fix that. They can read the popovertarget/commandfor idref for this, no?

It also allows for dynamic content to be added at a later point to also control the dialog; with this alternative syntax, the dynamic content would have to be added and then would have to go find the dialog and modify it to add the idref pointing to the new button.

There's a handful of existing idref attributes that *don't* have a property equivalent. I think for completeness sake we should add them.

Fwiw the idref allows doing anything that nesting would wrt browser automatic accessibility wiring. Unless ATs very specifically need something setup to be a child but even then there's ways around it.
