I think the US should honor Balogun's suspension, and not let Trump and FIFA create illegitimacy around a potential USA win.

The entire conservative legal movement and philosophy of “originalism” is premised on the illegitimacy of any SCOTUS decision that doesn’t fit the GOP party platform

The Supreme Court derives its power from its legitimacy. It earns its legitimacy by explaining its decisions. The endless stream of wholly unexplained orders in favor of the Trump administration is not just indefensible—it's a threat to the court's own long-term power. This reeks of illegitimacy.
Since April 4, #SCOTUS has issued 15 rulings on 17 emergency applications filed by Trump (three birthright citizenship apps were consolidated).

It has granted relief to Trump ... in all 15 rulings.

It has written majority opinions in only 3.

Today's order is the 7th with no explanation *at all.*
Here we go again: Over an acerbic dissenting opinion by Justice Sotomayor (joined in full by Justices Kagan and Jackson), #SCOTUS, with no explanation, grants a stay in the Department of Education RIFs case—effectively clearing the way for the Trump administration to dismantle much of the agency:

"In Elon Musk’s first two weeks in government" is a wild way to open a story alone, but uncritically calling Musk a "government official" in light of the patent illegitimacy of DOGE, before only hinting at that illegitimacy 27 grafs down, yikes
Our deep dive into Musk's takeover: Even some officials who like what Musk is doing feel helpless to hold him accountable. His allies are diving in to agencies, gaining access to systems, planning layoffs, and proposing a sweeping AI initiative to review contracts. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/u...

One of the reasons Moscow pointed to was the alleged illegitimacy of the Ukrainian president.

Now the situation has changed?

The crimes are too heinous, too existential. Flattened hospitals and emulsified children, justified with bad Hollywood scripts and transparent mouthpieces. Our establishment won't be able to quash opposition. By even attempting to silence it, they only expose their illegitimacy.

What we’ve seen in other countries is the violence of the state is directly proportional to the weakness and, often, illegitimacy of the regime in power.
Extrajudicial killings are not the sign of a strong regime but they may be the portent of a bloody one.

The thing about illegitimacy is that if some putative office-holder is illegitimate, that has, y'know, consequences. Implications.

Maduro was a brutal ruler, it’s true. So is Putin—who Trump supports. So was Bolsonaro, who Trump supports. So was the drug-trafficking former head of Honduras, who Trump just pardoned. So is Nayib Bukele in El Salvador. MBS. Bibi.

Stop pretending Trump cares about illegitimacy or brutality.
