Indian exports to U.S. face possible $10 billion hit from new Trump tariffs - BofA
Investing.com - India’s exports to the United States could be hit by $10 billion should heightened duties threatened by President Donald Trump come into effect, according to analysts at BofA Securities. U.S. tariffs on the South Asian nation are set to climb to 50% in three weeks should New Delhi fail to reach an agreement to lessen the duties. From Thursday, India will be subject to 25% levies, with an additional 25% trade tax to be imposed on August 28. In a note, the BofA analysts led by Rahul Bajoria estimated that, if no remedial actions are taken, India’s exports to the U.S. could face an effective tariff rate more than 32% -- up from its current level of roughly 20%. This would imply a net impact of $10 billion to India’s outgoing shipments to the U.S., the bank added. In 2024, exports from India to the U.S. were worth $80 billion. The value of trade between the two countries is reportedly estimated to stand at over $190 billion. "Given the widening tariff differential, while it is difficult to precisely estimate the hit to [India’s gross domestic product] growth, we believe the impact could be substantial if these additional tariffs stick, and may lead to a material slippage," they argued. Despite being one of the first to approach the White House to make a trade deal, India became the recipient of Trump’s trade ire over New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil. The matter, along with disagreements over the opening of India’s massive farm and dairy sectors, led to the collapse of five months of talks. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the country "will never compromise" the interests of its farmers, even that stance leads to a "heavy price" for him.
