i kinda get why they're popular; theyre infinitely more portable than ebikes and cheaper than folding ebikes (which are still not that portable). and in regions without good intermodality infra, they can work a lot better than a bike does.

There's also almost no intermodality. I just visited my stepmother in Marietta, OH. My options from NYC were: drive maybe 7 hrs, fly to CMH or PIT and rent a car, drive 2 or 2.5 hrs, fly to CMH and take a bus for 3.5 hours, or train to Pittsburgh where I can't rent a car at the station.
