Good for you for recognizing your needs & attending to them right away! Sometimes, it can be easy to convince ourselves to just 'try harder'. #internalizedableism is a bitch!

So many HCWs and researchers living with #LongCOVID…and being totally in denial sadly.

They’re being taught to see it as health #anxiety.

So they’re #gaslighting us…and themselves.

Distancing yourself from the #disability community, when you’re obviously disabled or a person with a disability IS caused by #ableism & internalized ableism

I’ve seen this frequently in the #stuttering community & the #ADHD community

#InternalizedAbleism #StutteringAwareness #StammeringAwareness
What #ableism and internalized ableism looks like:

You don’t call yourself “disabled” or a “person with a disability” even though it fits the definition under the law

You don’t call yourself disabled or a PWD even though your “condition” affects the way you live, decisions, job opportunities, etc

👆👆 other disabled / immunocompromised / chronically ill people can do this too & it’s called lateral ableism - everyone has privilege in various ways or levels

I 👩‍🚒harshly tapped my head with a spoon🙃 because I find myself a r3t4rd as I had a panic attack from a stupid misophonia trigger. Oh the joys of already being diagnosed autism since the 90s

" #InternalizedAbleism tells us there’s a hierarchy of #disability. But u don’t need to hit some invisible threshold of #suffering before yr allowed to ask for what u need. Fluctuating needs are valid. So is asking early—before it becomes an #emergency.": buff.ly/RepTroc

I may not see all the change I want in my lifetime. But every conversation we have, every time we raise our voices, we’re bringing the future closer to reality.

To anyone feeling like they’re “too much”—you’re not. Keep going. 💚♿

The societal messaging that disabled people should “make do” or “not be a burden” runs deep. It whispers that asking for help, even when it’s vital, is “too much.” That whisper has kept me from prioritizing my health in the ways I deserve. #InternalizedAbleism #DisabilityRights 🧵♿️

Part of unlearning internalized ableism is learning to acknowledge where your limits are instead of just shoving it down and feeling shame about it.
