Coercive control includes actions such as repeated insults, humiliation, threats to share private information, controlling social interactions, or limiting access to work or education. Judges emphasized that the conduct must be intentional and have a demonstrable effect on the victim’s ability to make decisions in their own life. The court also clarified that ordinary relationship difficulties, like disagreements or temporary conflicts, do not constitute grounds for litigation. However, the line between toxic behaviour and actionable abuse remains somewhat ambiguous, potentially leaving grey areas for courts to interpret in future cases. The ruling highlights the importance of addressing harmful relationship dynamics while cautioning against overreach that could criminalize less severe interpersonal conflicts. Experts suggest that existing criminal and civil remedies remain essential, alongside better police investigative capacity, court resources, and community support for victims of intimate abuse.
