It's the Union Flag unless it's flying from a jackstaff. Morons.

One could argue that that jackstaff is affixed to the prow of his vessel.

It’s the Union flag not a Union Jack. It’s not on a jackstaff. Fuck me these plastic patriots annoy me

Victory at Spithead, 1805 ⚓️🇬🇧

Victory (104) lies at anchor off the Isle of Wight, proudly flying her full suite of colours: the White Ensign at her stern, the Union Flag at the jackstaff, and the Vice Admiral of the White flag from her foretopmast.

The "Moltke" was a 25,000 tonne battlecruiser of the Imperial German Navy, 612' long, with ten 11" guns and good for 25.5kts. The pride of the fleet, fast enough to outrun anything stronger and strong enough to demolish anything faster.

Advent beer 4 is also a #notbeerbods beer. Jump/Ship Jackstaff IPA is fruity and decent tasting but a bit too flat. And the habanero hot sauce? Hot.

🚩 A naval jack is a flag flown at the bow of a vessel, typically from a short jackstaff.

A brief thread of European jacks.

Okay clearly everyone needs a refresher on some nautical terminology definitions. I'm posting this.

Simon Brocklehurst painted his house with a Union flag or Union Jack as this dim “patriot” calls it, even though it’s only called a Union Jack at sea flown on the bow of a ship, where on a small pole called a jackstaff..

He’s not “public enemy number one” just a thick right wing #PlasticPatriot 🙄🤷🏼‍♂️
'I'm public enemy number one online after painting a Union Jack on my house'
Despite his neighbours being 'really supportive', Simon Brocklehurst says he's had 'quite a lot of abuse' online

The top of the jackstaff onboard this Egyption vessel is adorned with the apotropaic symbol of the hamsa or hand of Fatimah with fingers spread to ward of evil, but seen from the deck calls up the unfortunate conotation of a person drowning. #Egypt, #Photography, #Arne'spictures, #prettypictures

Why is the British flag called the Union Jack? “Union” refers to the union represented by the flag. “Jack” is an old nautical term for a flag flown from a ship’s jackstaff—a short pole at the bow. So, “Union Jack” originally meant the Union flag flown from a ship.

An absolutely cracking thread full of museum ships/boats (and some modern ships too, but we won't judge :) ) - I'm a bit late to the party, but here's my contribution (Castlemaine, my fave museum ship). Scroll through the quoted thread for many great pics.

It's always either unless specifically flown from the Jackstaff.

In which case you can still say 'Flying the Union Flag as a Jack'.
March 2, 2026 at 5:54 PM
Isn’t it the Union Jack when being flown from the jackstaff of commissioned Royal Naval vessels? And the Union Flag otherwise?

Hmm... A tapestry? A hank, bundle or bindle? If you want a maritime feel you could go for pennant, or, for an exploratory group, a jackstaff or bonnet :)
