Man, I’m hesitant in this vibe-coded era to give any creator too much credit in case something shitty about them comes out later, but it sure as shit seems like Jotego is putting in some real, honest effort to do things the right way in this era of slopcores from everyone else and their sister.
From the latest update from Jotego’s Patreon: “JTKCPU: back to the real board Konami's custom CPU sits at the heart of quite a few arcade favorites. This week I put the FPGA's JTKCPU through a major update based on measurements from a real Vendetta PCB. We ran instruction probes on the original 053248 chip, recording results, condition flags and timing, then used that evidence to revise the FPGA CPU. This was done using Wickerwaka's PicoROM.” “The research exposed previously unknown instruction encodings and several cases where the old model set flags incorrectly. A game can make a decision on one of those flags, so a small CPU detail can become a very visible difference on screen. This is all new information for the whole scene, FPGA and software emulation alike. This affects games already supported by JTCORES: Aliens, Crime Fighters, Gang Busters / Crazy Cop, Super Contra, Thunder Cross, Ajax / Typhoon, Haunted Castle, The Simpsons, Parodius DA!, Surprise Attack and Vendetta. They share JTKCPU in our cores, although the physical measurements were made on Vendetta's 053248 and there is an older Konami CPU variant that still needs its own checks.”
