One of the earliest theorists of the fantastic, & grandfather of modern #fantasy literature, George MacDonald (1824–1905) was read & admired by CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien & Madeleine L’Engle, among others. There’s an ebook of LILITH on @gutenberg.org

Obviously this is true and good but ironically it’s so discouraging when people cite Hayao Miyazaki or JRR Tolkien in this vein because they’re like the opposite of this attitude. They consistently created art their entire lives and achieved legend status later in life because of it. Not helpful!

Real women read JRR Tolkien, and real men read Ursula K LeGuin

people read whatever they want.

Weird take lots of ‘may’ & ‘probably’ in this bizzaro take. I read Dostoevsky, JRR Tolkien, Larry Mc Murtry, Steinbeck, Judy Blume, Tom Clancy, etc.

Read all but Tom Clancy as a kid continued to read as an adult S. King & many of the above authors sans JBlume as an adult.

What a bizarre take imo

Principal photography for the LOTR movies began 27 years ago yesterday. That's now longer than the length of time between the beginning of principal photography and the actual death of JRR Tolkien himself.

Remember when I mentioned Kikuta-san had a surprising academic background? It shows. Compared to so many of its peers in the 90s JRPG space, Koudelka was pulling less from Japanese pop art conventions than from English literary influences.

Honoured to be awarded the British Fantasy Society’s Special Award for my contribution to the genre. Thanks to JRR Tolkien, who sparked my lifelong fascination; to all my colleagues and authors since the time when sff was a despised genre to the most successful sector of modern publishing. #books 💙📚

There is a great moment in the video, half way through this article, when Tolkien talks about the most tragic moment in LotR, & how thematically it encapsulates the message of good doing evil.

'Good often does evil': JRR Tolkien on 'the most tragic moment' in The Lord of the Rings
In 1968, the BBC broadcast extracts from JRR Tolkien's last ever recorded interview, 31 years after The Hobbit was published. In 2019, the full video was unearthed from the archive.

ELDEN RING's major religion is the Golden Order, which melds Christianity and Norse heathenry, in much the same way JRR Tolkien did, except Tolkien was a Catholic who liked heathenry and Fromsoft hate both with the kind of passionate hatred that is in almost every way the equal of love

Imagine the horror JRR Tolkein would have to the idea of a machine creating a fantasy world instead of a person, considering a large part of the ideas behind his work is fighting back against machines and automation (man hated farming machines with a passion usually reserved for racism)
