I still think about Pokémon insurgence opening with a quote from hamid karzai about the difficulties of counterterrorism

The irony of this dumb meme is that Hamid Karzai was such a big fan of Last of the Summer Wine that the British ambassador brought in box-sets for him by diplomatic bag.

I always blamed the three P's: Pakistan, Poppies, and Pres Karzai.
These days, I focus on Karzai--how can he be walking around Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. One can't imagine Lincoln walking around a post-war South ... because Southerners killed him.
That the guy heading the govt is fine now? 1/
Pakistan supported the Taliban because it got the Pashtun militias to stop pushing for independence of the Pashtun territories from the Pakistani state for a bit and focused most of their energy on Afghanistan and the US for a while. It was always kicking the can down the road but they got 20 years.

bro the US military didn’t kill afghan drug lords, they propped them up all the way to Karzai lmao

I have friends who served in Afghanistan who relied on translators during their mission. I have also gotten to know people who worked in the Karzai government. All were targeted by the Taliban after we left. They all loved America more than Trump ever has.

What if the Hamid Karzai International evacuation but a state actor was actively firing missiles at us during the crisis.

This altered image is recirculating.

The original shows the late Senator John McCain and Senator Lindsey Graham with former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai -- not Osama Bin Laden.

Oh it was a tremendous mistake. Karzai may have been better for them, but working against the Taliban would also potentially have alienated much of the Arab world (which was a huge investor in the country during the 1990s and 2000s).
Their reaction may have been understandable, but that doesn’t mean it was in Pakistan’s interests.

If Pakistan thought that having Afghanistan more aligned with India was a disaster, then their reaction fumbled America into being more aligned with India.

'During the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, while serving as a commander of the 82nd Airborne, Donahue was photographed boarding the final C-17 out of Hamid Karzai International Airport and widely described as the “last soldier” out of Afghanistan.'

karzai unlike massoud also wasnt a soldier which i feel like goes quite some way to explain the state of afghanistans military forces during his tenure as president

Learned that hamid karzai has not one but two brothers who run restaurants in the US

karzai meanwhile was hysterically corrupt and while not everything he did was bad hes got a lot to answer for wrt how afghanistan developed in the 13 years he ruled the country

When I was involved it was during the Karzai era, not the Ghani era. I know Karzai personally. I was standing within eyesight of him when Kandahar fell. I don't want to say that I was "critical" of him, but I don't really know the word that I'm looking for. Maybe "cautious."

Hamid Karzai helped oust the Taliban after 9/11 and became Afghanistan’s first elected president. Today, he needs Taliban permission to leave his home — but insists he has no regrets about staying. Read this weekend's interview here: bloom.bg/4gjKc7n

Hamid Karzai had a great quote I shall paraphrase and repurpose here

"To the people of Israel and Palestine, I send love, to their governments, I send hatred, my absolute hatred. "

They are monsters, both of them.

like if massoud survives past 9/11 rather than being assassinated literally 2 days before, his northern alliance remnant territory still becomes the launching pad for the US intervention (as it did historically) and he becomes the natural guy to put in charge of the government rather than karzai
