#keyness
The only things stopping us from full-on lunacy all the time:
- general low-keyness and secularism
- Māori
- bolshy women

At #DH2026, we’ll discuss community engagement in digital publishing, why sustainability matters in web development, and present our study "Timing-Based Signals of Plot Keyness in Audiobooks", which explores narrative patterns through timing data. (2/3)

Join us at the 30 Years of Keyness event in Liverpool! @michamahlberg.bsky.social and I will talk about „Water keywords and digital environmental humanities“ connecting #DigitalHumanities, #Environment and #CorpusLinguistics, one of the themes of Prof. Mahlberg‘s @textandlanguagelab.bsky.social
May 21, 2026 at 3:53 PM
And last but not least. Our third talk asks whether audiobook timing can signal narrative importance. The study links plot keyness to pauses and reading speed, finding that longer pauses show a weak but significant relation to key moments, while tempo is less reliable. (4/4)

Yes please everybody- if you sing loud enough, we might be able to stop wincing at the teeth grindingly off keyness of this performance #totp

New preprint with the fantastic team at @snsf-ch.bsky.social and @ucddublin.bsky.social.

Important findings:
– Quality of training data more important than quantity
– Separate binary classifiers performed best
– Fine-tuned transformers outperformed few-shot LLMs

I couldn't help comparing it unfavourably to Marathon Man, but as it went on I started to admire it's dogged low-keyness and refusal to please the crowd. And that ending is terrific. Ambigous, the story unfinished, but not at all a cop-out, just a real sense of being left out in the cold

Awesome! Our new paper in #dhq has just been published!

It discusses three measures of #keyness (or #distinctiveness) when applied to #subgenres of the #French #novel.

The twist is that we perform a #qualitative #evaluation of the measures by relating each list […]
