I grew up with the lurid confusion of Snib Scott ( who had been a bank account in Dundee until the 1940s) and Sawney Bean. Even still when we were on holiday in Lendalfoot in 1978, the year of Dallas, Superman the Movie and Space Invaders.

Snib's Cave (Bennane Cave), on the Ayrshire coast, near Lendalfoot. It was the home of Henry Ewing Torbet, aka Snib Scott (after an earlier inhabitant in the 1920s) for 30 years, until a severe storm in 1983 left him with pneumonia.

Sea levels have risen and fallen dramatically since the last Ice Age. A new study by BGS and @noc.ac.uk reveals submerged glacial landforms across the Irish Sea and western Scotland that record ancient shorelines carved by waves.

Truncated drumlins offshore the Ayrshire coast, approximately between Girvan and Lendalfoot. The MBES bathymetry data was collected for the UK's Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP), managed by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency's (MCA) and delivered in partnership with the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO). The onshore DEM is BGS Nextmap data.

Presumably, it was being towed to Clydebank for scrapping, but ran aground in 1919 near Lendalfoot village. It was scrapped in place over the next few years... the remnants still remain visible at low tide. And so ended the voyage of the heroic VARYAG.

Two rocks either side of the country always started our holidays - Ailsa Craig off Lendalfoot and the Bass Rock when we stayed in North Berwick. So good for the imagination!
