Nowadays most protestants, and even Roman Catholics are aghast at the intensity of lenten observance by the Russian Orthodox, etc. Who knew that anyone would abstain from alcohol, meat, most fats, and smoking for ~8 weeks? Especially Russians!!! But they actually do.

❤️Well, Catholics LOVE fixed rules, but interpretations can still vary! My mother used to chuckle about sermon in her childhood parish where the priest grumbled that people kept asking him what counted as a liquid for Lenten fasts, and then intoned: "A liquid is something a spoon won't stand up in!"😎
