Working with structured dictionary data?
Lexonomy's NVH format is easier to read than XML, and its visual editor takes care of the syntax. You can import and export XML too.

What horrible inverted snobbery!
I went to Birmingham Poly. My degree (English Language and Literature) included the social history of the language, sociolinguistics, etymology, lexicography and lots of other language stuff. I loved it - preferred it to the literature parts.

Some fun neologisms I came up with 👇

Commandible – having to eat something you don't like out of politeness

Splatsigh – that moment when you've dropped something on the floor, it's ruined and you're going to have to clear it up

🧟 spooky lexicography 👻

"Incubus, nightmare" in Syriac is ܢܠܐ /nålå/ or ܟܒܘܫܐ /kåbošå/ (≈ Arb كابوس /kābūs/), w/ Syr ܟܒܫ /kḇaš/ ≈ Arb كبس /kabasa/ "press". Syr /nålå/ (& sim. in JBA & Mnd) is presumably rel. to Akk /nâlu/ "lie down", cf. also Syr/JBA/Mand /nawwel/ "torment" (AIOA 75).

Why wait 60 years? It'll take a manosphere/ketamine haze Rosetta stone to decipher this even now.

Creating such a tool seems like a genuinely important contribution to the body of knowledge for linguistics, sociology, psychotherapy, ethnography and lexicography.

The "tonsi" video (trans/nonbinary in toki pona)
Well let's hope I don't regret posting this video lol I AM AWARE that there are other theories of meaning besides lexicography. But, as someone who values practicality, and also a lexicographer, I…

I'm reading @rebeccashapiro.bsky.social's new book on lexicography and dictionaries. It's great. As Shapiro makes clear, one of the fascinating things about American history is the unruly nature of the English language and how efforts to link words to stable categories of meaning constantly failed

Dictionary.com names 'maxxing' as 2026 word of the year amid cultural optimization trend
Dictionary.com has selected 'maxxing' as its 2026 Word of the Year, reflecting a cultural trend of optimizing every aspect of life. The term, which involves adding 'maxxing' to various activities to indicate maximum optimization, has seen a significant surge in usage across digital media. Dictionary.com's lexicography director Steve Johnson noted that the word connects to multiple facets of modern life, from 'proteinmaxxing' for breakfast to 'tokenmaxxing' for AI use at work. The phenomenon originated in gaming communities like Dungeons & Dragons and later spread through online platforms, particularly 4chan, where terms like 'looksmaxxing' emerged. However, the term has moved beyond its origins to become mainstream, embraced by middle-aged individuals and corporate brands alike. Linguist Kelly Wright observes that 'maxxing' is highly adaptable, applicable to virtually any activity, and its popularity may be partly due to its phonetic appeal. While the term has roots in online communities associated with 'incel' culture, its current usage is largely disconnected from these origins. Researchers warn that the relentless pursuit of optimization through 'maxxing' could lead to unhealthy self-surveillance and unrealistic expectations about personal improvement. Despite concerns, linguists believe 'maxxing' has staying power, unlike fleeting trends such as '-licious', and may become a permanent part of the English language. The term's versatility and cultural resonance suggest it will continue to evolve as people find new ways to apply it to their daily routines.
