The library saved me as a kid growing up in poverty on a council estate

Have worked in multiple libraries, including a large University while a student. Before the current unhoused crisis people were seeking quiet shelter in libraries. Resourceful student staff collected supplies & distributed coats & snacks. Proud to this day that we stepped up to help those in need.

I practically lived in my elementary school library, and one year, when school ended for the summer, my school librarian gave me a library card for the county library system, which I used faithfully for over 20 years. Her name was Frances Caskey and she was one of the best people I've ever known.

When I was a teenager I took public transport to and from school and waited in the local library afterwards for my dad to finish work and collect me. I read, I did homework, I borrowed books and tapes, I was safe and warm. I work in libraries now and getting that job felt like coming home.

#Libraries are are crucial and invaluable public resource on this score. #LibrariesChangeLives.
Reading is the sole reason I could grow up in the poisonously bigoted small-town environment I did and come out being violently opposed to prejudice in all its forms instead of turning into a carbon copy of 99% of the people around me. Loads of this in Keshed.

Libraries and librarians saved me as a kid. Palaces of wonder.

I’m not a religious person but entering a library for me is akin to how I think those who believe feel going in to church. The library is my house of worship. I find my answers and comfort there

The weekly library trip with my parents as a kid, I’ll never forget when I changed from my children’s card to a grownup card and was allowed free rein to all the other shelves. Joined a library book club which gave me the confidence to talk to other people about books, something I’d never do before.

Our town had a brand new library in 1986. One of the great features was a computer right by the window at the front that connected to a kid’s toy keyboard stuck to the outside of the window so you could operate the computer, reserve books, pay fines etc from outside when the library was shut.

My school library was my sanctuary - a place where I expanded my knowledge and horizons, next to the career library with the prospectus of every university in the UK. I was the first woman in my family to go to University straight after school, because the library was the place I could go.

I loved the library. Fostered my love of of reading and inquisitiveness. It continues to this day. Not just the books and media but the people I met through the activities the library would sponsor
#LibrariesChangeLives. The amount of responses sharing similar experiences is testament to what a crucial resource libraries are for so many people who grew up in families and/or communities that are financially disadvantaged

Every Saturday morning my father, sister and I walked to the local library, where I started with Tintin and Asterix and then worked my way up the bookshelves. Once a month he bought us a cornetto icecream on the way home. Good dad. Good memories.

It's #LibrariesWeek and the theme is #LibrariesChangeLives - we couldn't agree more!

We think Sarah Smith, Libraries Development Manager at Brent Libraries, puts it perfectly 👇

Libraries for me have been a source not just of books, but also of cool music, world cinema, and in the early days of the internet, they were a place to go online. Where was I on 11 September 2001? Using the library computer. Only found out what had happened once I got home. A strange memory.

My grammar school library in the 70s was like something out of Billy Bunter - all wax polished floors and large wooden tables. I'd spend hours leafing through bound copies of Punch and The Listener - usually after forging a note from my mum asking for me to be excused PE.

"Unstructured acceptance," what a wonderful coinage. #LibrariesChangeLives
As a child the library local studies room mattered to me, the local museum did also, a bit different I volunteered there, the library was unstructured acceptance, I had a deeper engagement with the museum staff, the kind acceptance and space to grow from library staff was special.

My hometown received an Andrew Carnegie-funded library building in the 19th century. 100 yrs later, my dad took me, first time. I found an adult book on dinosaurs. They let me take it home, for free. I was 7?
Hooked ever since.
Took my boys when they were old enough to read.
Libraries are my legacy.

In 2012/13 I was legally homeless, eating out of skips, and having a teeny tiny psychotic break. The library in Worcester was a literal life saver: a warm, safe space where I could just exist without pressure or fear. I wrote, I read, I figured shit out, and I survived. #LibrariesChangeLives

I go to Bishopston Library every Saturday, get out 20 books each week for my 3 kids, spend an hour doing the colouring sheets and browsing the cook books. All for free in a city where everything costs too much. I ❤️❤️❤️ it

I recall fondly my trips to the public library with dad, first at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, then at Bay Shore LI. He got them to issue me adult borrowing privileges a few years early.

I worked in Inverness Library. A widower re-borrowed and read his wife's romantic novels to stay closer to her.
