Johann Gottfried Steffan (1815–1905) was a Swiss landscape painter regarded as one of the most important Swiss landscapists of the 19th century. Born in Wädenswil, he initially trained as a lithographer before moving to Munich in 1833 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. Under the influence of Carl Rottmann, Steffan shifted his focus to realistic landscape painting, becoming a central figure among Swiss artists working in Munich. His work specialized in idealized mountain and Alpine scenes, drawing inspiration from the Swiss Alps, the Canton of Glarus, Lake Walen, and later from Berchtesgaden and Ramsau. Residences of delegates who voted for and against secession on April 17, 1861, displayed on E. I found this map to be enlightening . "On April 17, 1861, the Virginia Convention voted 88 to 55 in favor of secession. That vote took place when civil war was breaking out, and the delegates had to decide which side to take. Plotting the places of residence of the delegates on an 1861 map showing the distribution of slaves in Virginia illustrates that most of the 55 delegates who opposed secession resided in the greater Ohio Valley, in or near the Shenandoah Valley, or near the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.

In 1897, the first marathon in the United States took place on an unmeasured 24.5-mile course from Ashland to Boston, with John J. McDermott, a New York City lithographer, winning the race in 2:55:10.
