I'd argue that a ban on gun ownership is unnecessary, as in Canada we have tons of longguns, but not tons of gun crime. It's basically hunters who have them. We also have very strict laws regulating them.
Its a cultural problem in the US as much as it is a problem with the physical guns themselves.

Was in a private Christian HS gym for a basketball tourney last winter and there was a huge banner on the wall with a bunch of white teenagers holding longguns with CRUSADERS written underneath. It was the skeet shooting team (¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and school's mascot is the crusaders ((╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻)

I'm perfectly fine with people owning guns, they are fun to shoot! I just want ownership of a gun to be as tightly regulated as (at least) driving a car. If you can pay for a 2,000 pistol, you can pay a $45 registration fee, Clarence.
