Longstreet, his old friend from West Point, knew. "That man will fight us *every day* until the end of the war."

The entire cast commits magnificently to this malignant melodrama with actors Robert Longstreet and

Much of Jackson’s success was owed as much to the quality of his opponents as it was to any native genius on his part. As Longstreet said when asked about what went wrong at Gettysburg, “I think the Yankees had something to do with it.” The same was true with Jackson’s legend.

Jackson was actually a fairly unimaginative tactician who had the distressing habit of sending units into battle piecemeal. His poor performance during the Seven Days was enough to make Lee question his value, and he never enjoyed with the trust with his boss that Longstreet did.

It was Longstreet who told Lee that Grant was not like the other Union generals Lee had battled.

(Longstreet was a pallbearer at Grant's funeral, btw.)

Lee: does something spectacularly stupid like send a division to certain death across a mile of open territory beneath a ridge.

Longstreet: 'The Federals are going to smash us now.'

McClellan: Does nothing, believes Lee has 5 times his numbers in reserve.

Alas, it was the 8th Kansas Infantry’s role to be the first regiment into the gap. And as they were shuffling into line, Longstreet launched his massive attack. The veterans of the 8th claimed they got off nearly 4 volleys, but I can’t imagine they got much more than 2 or 3 before being forced away.

I fully anticipate that they will/are. It’s the Austin Simmons deal. They don’t have a Chambliss on the bench but the whole implicit deal that Lane makes with these guys is that you can be a dummie; but when he gives you layups you hit them. And he didn’t do it. If Clark or Longstreet can, next up

I would say the biggest mistake was not hanging Jeff Davis, Alexander Stephens, Braxton Bragg, Joe Johnston, John Bell Hood, (maybe Longstreet), Nathan Bedford Forrest, Edmund Kirby Smith, and several others in 1865.

But this is close.

I don’t know who I would cast to play Grant, but J. K. Simmons would totally crush Meade and Hugh Jackman could play a convincing Longstreet.

The Confederate victory falls victim to petty squabbles among the high command, as neither Bragg nor Longstreet can stand each other, and the usual contretemps in the Army of Tennessee assert themselves in the flush of victory. Bragg and Longstreet go their separate ways.

Though Wood, a good soldier of solid reputation, knew that Rosecrans’ order would result in a fatal error, nonetheless dutifully obeys. Gen. James Longstreet, whose veterans of Lee’s army have joined Bragg, masses a force of eight brigades, led by his lieutenant, John B. Hood, to force the gap.

You’ll have men like Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain who you’re gonna laud for winning your most important battles but who will still go on to legalize eugenics… that said you also get confederate general Longstreet leading a black militia trying to save voting rights in the south during reconstruction.

That said, the human personal aspect is endlessly fascinating.

Longstreet is one of my favorite “favorite generals” because he was a rare thinking man’s fighter (even as he devoted his considerable abilities to a cause he recognized was wrong).
