So I said “Bobby Lee, it sounds like you’re just feeding brigades to emplaced artillery” and then Longstreet started crying.

At the age of 80, Helen Dortch Longstreet--wife of former Confederate general and postwar Republican James Longstreet--worked in a Georgia factory helping to make B-29 bombers during WWII.

Or put Longstreet in New Orleans because he was right on Reconstruction

James Longstreet was one of the most important Confederate generals and yet there are just 13 memorials to Longstreet compared to 59 for JEB Stuart and 64 for Beauregard. That's because post war, Longstreet supported Reconstruction and led a militia against the White League during this battle.
Today is the 152nd anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in New Orleans history, when 5,000 members of the Crescent City White League overthrew the Louisiana government in an armed assault that left at least 35 dead. The attack was a turning point in Reconstruction

If you’re looking for a historic model of this, check out Gen. James Longstreet. Once in the high command of the Army of Northern Virginia, on the field at Gettysburg, Longstreet renounced his Confederate ties and became a Republican after the war, advocating for Black rights.
The correct frame is to get these latecomers to accept the damage they’ve done by giving them the task of repairing it and putting them to work. No coddling their feelings; make them show how much they regret this.

I would like to introduce General James Longstreet, a Confederate general, who became a fierce advocate for black voting rights in Louisiana. Not a lot of statutes for General Longstreet, who not only became a Republican, but a radical one, jacobin.com/2024/01/jame....

The guns are going silent, one by one. A courier dashes to Longstreet telling him the time is now or never. Longstreet cannot bring himself to give the order. He simply nods. Horses carrying orderlies with the attack message canter across Seminary Ridge through the drifting smoke and eerie quiet

It's intensely funny in an ironic sense that actually effective Confederate generals (Longstreet, Jackson, Johnston) never had bases named after them—but some of the most incompetent officers the United States has ever had (Bragg, Hood) did.

Says a lot about the priorities of the Lost Causers tbh.

Your reminder that Joshua Chamberlain thought it was a moral imperative to fight the Confederacy but he didn't have any background as an Army officer, so he was like, "Hmm, I should study Casey's Infantry Tactics and Duparcq's Elements of Military Art and History", and that's how he beat Longstreet.
Happy “liberal arts professor helps save the Union” day to all who celebrate

Man, James Longstreet from the top rope: “Squads of men parading the streets with arms in their hands is only an armed mob.”

Meanwhile James Longstreet, the most effective and innovative Confederate general, got blamed for mistakes during the Gettysburg campaign that he warned Lee against. Probably just a coincidence that after the war Longstreet joined the Republicans and supported southern acceptance of Reconstruction
I'd add that the portrayal of Lee as a military genius is also completely dishonest. Lee was directly responsible for the strategic decision that lost the war for the Confederacy (1863 invasion of the north) and made that decision for dumb and foolish reasons.
Always good on Appomattox day to remember that Robert E. Lee was a vile human being whose historical portayal as a reluctant defender of slavery is based on complete fabrication. He was a committed white supremacist who believed slavery reflected a natural order and commanded his army as such.

If he’s a real person, he and James Longstreet are allies in the 1880s.

The better someone like Longstreet looks the worse Lee does, and god knows they couldn’t have that, historical accuracy be damned. (Also, of course, Longstreet was damnatio memoriae’d due to his overseeing a racially-integrated polity and militia as a Republican in Louisiana after the war.)

again- Longstreet has historically been blamed for the failure of Pickett’s charge even though Longstreet told Lee it was doomed from the start. But Bobby Lee was exculpated because of the lost cause mythology

1) He couldn't manage his subordinates/staff. He was overly reliant on 2 trusted aides. Stonewall, a whackjob himself, was killed & Longstreet outgrew Lee. Once Stonewall was killed, Lee couldn't figure out how to replace him. Once Longstreet outgrew Lee, the latter could no longer depend on him. 2/
