#MakersmARTch day 23. Stain when chip carving, it’s remarkable how much staining a piece can alter its appearance. Basswood really should be sealed before staining, but I was in a hurry.
A chipcarved basswood ornament I made in December while I was laid up recovering from my burn surgery. It has not been stained- this is the natural colour of the wood. The same ornament after staining and making a brass hanger.

This was my first linoblock print- an image of the old farmhouse at the Yorktown Victory Center. At the time I was the Farm supervisor there, and I cut this block to print holiday cards for my staff. We had just finished the transition to our new site and torn down the old one, and I wanted to commemorate the fact that we were the ones- last of the Old Guard, first of the vanguard. I’d planned to do the new farmhouse the following year but life got in the way. Blick Linoblock, Speedball ink, Flexcut and Speedball cutters. When I became the supervisor of James Fort, I cut this block of John Smith and the holly stamps specifically so I could make my new staff “Merry Smithmas” cards. A dad joke 400 years in the making. Block was Blick Lino, Speedball ink. Holly stamps were Speedball Speedy Carve and a couple of cheap stamp pads I bummed off my kid. Ramelson and Flexcut tools. Woodblock I carved with the idea that I could do a handful of them and print them on a Tshirt to wear when I’m demonstrating carving at the state fair and other shows/festivals. I have several, just haven’t made the shirt yet. Basswood, Pfeil chip carving knife, Flexcut palm gouges. Speedball ink. At RavenCon last year I was in a panel with 5 authors. At one point Ursula Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher) said “I try to be a good person, but I still laugh when a Cybertruck blows up.” A while later someone posed the question “we all know that when a bell rings, an angel gets its wings, but when does a demon get its horns?” And I hollered “that’s what happens when the Cybertruck blows up!” Everybody laughed, and the Muse grabbed me by the ear and said “come with me, young man!” By the time we left for home I had the whole thing figured out. I was up until 3am drawing, cutting, printing and hand-lettering a first night run. The next day I tracked down every author who had been on the panel and presented them with their own prints. Speedball SpeedyCarve, Speedball ink, Flexcut and Ramelson tools.

I only do so much with ceramics; they’re mostly Lara’s thing, but here’s a few. I was playing around with reproductions of 17th century Delft tiles…
A polychrome Delft tile with a picture of a turkey on it, based on an original piece. A classic Delft tile with a picture of an owl sitting on a branch, with flourishes in each corner. A tile with an image of the pinnace Virginia on it, before firing. The glaze gets to be a much darker blue when fired. The Virginia was the first English ship built in North America, at the Popham Colony on the Kennebec River in what is now Maine, in 1608. A tile with an image of a retro rocketship. Not based on a 17th century piece.

Based on a piece from the Oseburg hoard. Chip carved live-edge basswood, gel stain. Christmas ornament I made for my mother in law to commemorate her finally getting to realize her lifelong dream of flying in a hot air balloon. Butternut and paste wax. Chipcarved basswood plaque.

#MakersmARTch Day 5 #wood
This is a knife I made based on a piece circa 1500 and a wooden sheath inspired by examples from the 1540s.
The knife has curly maple (Acer saccharum) handle scales treated with aqua fortis (ferric nitrate) and held on by brass tube rivets formed from cartridge casings- .22 magnum and .308. The blade is carbon steel. The sheath is tulip poplar (Lirodendron tulipifera) which was split, hollowed out with chisels, fit together, and then I cut the grooves and poured the pewter fittings. Once I cast and cleaned those, the sheath was chip carved and treated with aqua fortis. A view of the knife in the sheath.

#MakersmARTch if you're ever in south central Germany (is that a thing?) There's a whole museum dedicated to thimbles! Check out their site, there are a few tid bits of interesting info on there. And some cool looking thimbles from ancient times.
