Playing in Japanese has been great practice bc it's for little babies so it's entirely in hiragana/katakana. But it's also fun to realise why some Pokemon things are the way they are - like Celadon Mansion was called that bc they mistranslated "manshon" when it should be more like Celadon Heights
Got hit with a sudden wave of nostalgia so I'm playing the original Pokemon Green...! It struck me that I never talk about Pokemon despite it being up there with Sailor Moon & One Piece for me, so I'm trying to post about it more.

What was your first game? Mine was Silver so I'm a Gen 2 baby 💪

Voltando a Digimon... Eu nunca tinha reparado nisso, um momento de Engrish-Cultural haha.

Em japonês, "mansion" (manshon) significa prédio/condomínio. Foi um caso de... esqueci o nome, mas sabe, pegar uma palavra estrangeira e mudar o significado aplicado

Damn, that is the most depressing advert for a "manshon" I've ever seen. "You too can live in front of a giant heat-reflecting square of asphalt! Enjoy the ground-level parking with no shade whatsoever! Try not to lock your kids in the car!"

Encara ens falta molt per instalarnos del tot a la nova manshon, però mica en mica veure com aquest nou projecte de vida pren forma és la joia de cada dia.

Random word of the day:
億ション(おくしょん)
An "okushon" refers to a condo unit or apartment that is worth ¥100 million or more. "Oku" means "100 million" and "shon" comes from "manshon" (condo unit/apartment).

see, マンション (manshon) is an example of Wasei-eigo, Japanese words that are based on English words, but do not carry the same meaning in English. They're pseudo-loanwords.

in English, a "mansion" is a large opulent house that a single wealthy family lives in. NOT an apartment building!

Otra palabra japonesa graciosa es マンション (manshon), que sospecharías que significa "mansión", pero es en realidad un bloque de apartamentos o incluso un apartamento suelto.

first, the title: 訳アリ心霊マンション (wakeari shinrei manshon).

wakeari = defective
shinrei = ghost
manshon = condominium

This title describes the premise very neatly: she bought a condo at a discount price, but it turned out to be haunted.

So why is the English title not just "Defective Ghost Condo"?

They could be tricky, though. "Manshon" in Japanese means an apartment, and "Aisu" doesn't mean "Ice" but "Ice Cream".

There is almost every type of modern home found here: a few detached houses of a 1970-80s style. Small detached units with four apartments, and then a wide range of apartment units with some reasonable quality manshon. I don't see luxury manshon nor modern well designed, prefab, detached homes.

I'm tryna catch up on the VODs. Was the random cut-off mid-sentance at the end of this stream and the Lugi Manshon stream due to the crummy internet?

It's all a bit convoluted, but there's some play on going up from 万 (10,000) to 億 (100 million), even though manshon is typically written マンション as a loanword from "mansion" (yes, some real estate exaggeration there).

Giant Manshon complex in order to get a interchange between Keikyu and the Rinkai line.
Haneda Access is coming.
Tokyo Monorail needs 2 infill stations at that point too. (JR East owns it so they should be getting ready now).

I guess my view is that once a loanword has been adopted it's the culture that defines it. Nice was originally Old French but its meaning is very different now. Japanese uses manshon (mansion) to refer to apartments even though they also have apato (apartment) which refers to something else.

After getting engaged, I moved in with my fiancée. Our new place was a funky old manshon apartment just a couple hundred meters from the shrine.

Within a few days, I realized that I'd come full circle, and it still seems amazing to me that it happened that way.
