I'm genuinely curious as to what this would do to trade flows and low margin import businesses across America

Sometimes there are trade offs, but this zero-sum fixation is a poor and inaccurate model of public opinion. Lots of people are doing lots of different things over huge amounts of time. The idea that *at the margin* Van Hollen's activities with KAG *hurt* senate dems chances seems obviously wrong.

By and large, these aren't "tariffs" per se, which try to balance prices. It's more like an embargo. The port fees on ships made in China, due to start April 17, would by themselves render unprofitable huge amounts of low-margin trade used throughout our economy. Stuff which we don't make here.
The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*

Problem is that these are the returns to free trade and improvements in material engineering, fabrication, and electronic engineering which is much less hype driven and not the story of market speculation. It is the result of low margin, cut throat industry and market specialization. Alas.
