New paper out today! Led by Daniel Schwarz, we retrodeformed the skull and reconstructed the cranio-mandibular musculature of the giant stem-amphibian Mastodonsaurus giganteus. Our results show that Mastodonsaurus had a powerful bite and a crocodile-
like bite-and-hold feeding style.

This is an illustration I am doing for my book (still in preparation). Mastodonsaurus giganteus lived during the Middle Triassic in Europe

The amphibian in question (Mastodonsaurus) was a large, well-armed, & ferocious predator in its own right. There is a 60 cm Mastodonsaurus skull and mandibles with bite marks from another, much larger Mastodonsaurus. Tusks of adults could be >14 cm long.

More than 2,000 volunteers in Warsaw are helping scientists restore the skeleton of a Mastodonsaurus, a 240-million-year-old, six-metre-long aquatic predator.

Once restoration is complete, it will be the largest skeleton of its kind anywhere in the world.

Amphibians that qualify as “big predator that would eat you/could fight another big dangerous animal” did exist, though. For example, above is a large Mastodonsaurus individual.
