I have the degree although I have not been a research mathematican since getting it.

FWIW, I don't count proofs that come out of a casuistry machine.

What I got from school is an ability to think precisely. Using LLM tools seems to be the opposite of that.

This reminds me of the Azimov story about the Mathematican doing long division without a calculator and it being so wonderful they had to demonstrate it before the President. Cant remember the name.

IT WAS SO FUCKING PEAK! THERE IS NO MATHEMATICAN, COMPUTER, OR GOD THAT COULD ACCURATELY COUNT MY HOURS ON THAT GAME!

Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion ALONE have a hold on my brain to this day.

Katherine Johnson published an autobiography in 2019, an all-ages book that beautifully tells her story without sugarcoating her experiences with racism. Kirkus called it "a national treasure."

Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 10+. My kid read it in one sitting — she couldn’t put it down.

what has this hypothetical mathematican lost, relative to those of us who lived in 2025 (and subsequent) and who know what the conjecture was, and why zilber made it?

i have to admit, this made me grin: "understand more proof-techniques". forensic examination of llm outputs? who has infinite cash??

So as Mathematican, whenever i do Algebra, do i need to ask my matrices and tensors about their feelings?
Seriously, did those companies fell for their own anthropomorphization schemes? LLMs are just huge matrixes with wiggly numbers. No emotions attached. Next token predictors, nothing else.

I don’t even know what a Stern-Gerlach magnet is! But I know what its mathematican representation is in experiments, so I was able to do this.

Turing was a mathematican, most of the people recruited in Bletchley park in the early days were Classical scholars, they were shite. Turing understood maths, a very undervalued gift in a world led by public schoolboys who went to Oxford & Cambridge.

In #MathsToday it's the final day for year 2, so my A Level Further Maths students had a quiz (with questions taken from the brilliant @draustinmaths.com further maths section for each round)

Which is my gentle (yes, this is *gentle*), snarky way of explaining to you that he is about as likely to have made "his first million" off fortuitous investment in a 401(k) as I am to spontaneously wake up tomorrow morning as the Actual LHP Mathematican Catboy God-Emperor of Spain & Portugal

Of course consciousness is just the Pythagorean Theorem but in Greek letters instead of Latin! It all makes sense!

Why didn't Greek mathematican Pythagoras figure this out?!

...as a philosopher he was too much the mathematican. He was apparently self-taught (like Boole), and "seemed to believe that advanced mathematics was understood by all".

It's more likely what a physicist would do too, rather than a mathematican.. though I would argue we do it far more effectively than economists!

A3 #LTHEchat Yes, absolutely!! One of the ke elements is "how do we embed students in the 'culture' of our discipline?" so they learn what it means to be a bilogist, mathematican, doctor, engineer etc

The #popular notion is … of something heaving up & down, or … breaking on a shore. But if you ask a #mathematican … the most general #wave … the #differential #equation
d²y/dt² = v² · d²y/dx²
… the simplest wave is
y = 𝑎 sin(x - vt).
