MATHPHYS is a research group at LaDIS focused on theoretical and mathematical physics. With 21 members, they work on theories beyond general relativity, gravitational waves, galaxy evolution, quantum communication, and sensors. They also build models for complex systems.

I'm so incredibly glad I ended up doing mathphys instead of CS. by the grace of god go I

undergrad mathphys discord group chat broke out into "why are goths so hot?" this evening, I think the kids are going to make it.

one of my friends in undergrad mathphys discord just accused me of liking differential geometry and I had to yell at him.

Moving back to MathPhys then…

Yeah like I’m coming at all this from the math side, which is actually a very rare position—most people who study this stuff do so out of CS, which has certain blind spots as a field, and not that many mathphys people study it—but I came to the same conclusions as him quickly based on the hype cycle

AFAICT he was always like this. At least, his stories about his glorious genius go back to undergrad

Penrose OTOH is indisputably immortal in mathphys history, but chooses to spend his final years on extremely dubious claims about quantum consciousness that AFAICT only seem to hurt his legacy

I just came home from giving a pure math seminar to some mathphys students, it's literally the only thing I'm capable of doing and no one will ever pay me to do it.

Chat I went to the library before the mathphys seminar yesterday and I got books on elliptic cohomology and on topological modular forms. Please press 'F' to pay respects.

Currently have ideas for a pure maths paper, a mathphys paper, and a logic paper and if I were to pursue them my career would be DOA because potential employers would judge me to be "lack focus"

even if you wanted to, you'd have to pay lol

But yeah it's happened before that he wildly inflated the claims of completely honest guests. Someone I know from mathphys conferences (who's always been very honest about her work) had apparently discovered the "Missing Link... [Geometric Quantization]"

the IHES guys systematically blocks my articles, I submitted one article to a Parisian math journal and overlooked the IHES guy sitting in the panel, two weeks later i get the refusal 'not conformal with editorial lines' although so to speak the eta invariant is a fundamental mathphys invariant

one of the editors I chose at 'Communications in mathematical physics' was moreover an ex-permanent professor at IHES (permanent is not what it used to be there). I have no idea what made them claim a paper on the eta invariant is beyond the scope of a mathphys journal.
thete is a new generation of professors at IHES who are far to the right, one cannot say it diffetently. it is not Gromov, the problem is not Gromov. there's also one guy worh a sports car. who is it actually??
only a single IHES permanent professor signed the Leiden declaration. It is a terrible sign. The institute had very biased conferences on that theme before. leidendeclaration.ai/signatories?...

maybe someone in France does twistor theory in mathphys. but i found the thing always highly unappealing. it is no real theory hut more a huge bag of examples. i have no examples in my theory. none.
after having to introduce twistor spaces into my things lately i had to admit that my colleague in Prague was right when he said years ago these things ressemble Penrose's constructions. but i never read his papers. he doesn't use symplectic spinors too.
they are of course all the incremental progress guys. and when you have a fundamentally new theory these guys these guys don't want to have anything to do with you. NEVER.

when someone told me about line bundles in mathphys and even trivial line bundles i really did not even look at it. it was just like ah so you have a charged particle but not even interacting or whatever..
