Numerical coincidences for 2025
There seem to be a lot of numerical coincidences bouncing around concerning the new year 2025. For example, it’s a square number: \( 2025 = 45^2 \). The last square year was \(44^2 = 1936\), …

For teachers:

Looking for a solid extension task? Here is a lovely question that interleaves three different mathematical topics to challenge your pupils.

Find x.

The 2025 Game: arrange the digits 2, 0, 2 and 5 with symbols in between (e.g. +, -, ×, ÷, ^, !, etc.) to make the numbers 0-10. For example, 2+0+2+5=9. How many can you make?

(I just confirmed all numbers 0-10 are possible.)

Take the binary representation of 1/√2, but then interpret the digits (still all 1s and 0s) in base-3. Clearly this number is also irrational. But is it expressible in some kind of closed form?

I'm working on a new talk about big prime numbers - how we choose which numbers to check, primality tests, and what we use big primes for. Anyone got topics or factoids they'd definitely want to see as part of that talk?

(Also, please boost this so that I can find MathsSky, which surely must exist)

We round off the latest season of Mathematical Objects with a chat about Lewis Carroll's Game of Logic.

Our chat inspired me to make the cake shown here as the episode picture, which won the 'best maths in a cake' award at the MathsJam Gathering 2024!

Stumbled upon the Wikipedia article of Grigori Perelman who has achieved many many outrageously clever things, but perhaps most charmingly declined an interview in 2021 by saying

Are there any mathematical concepts not currently part of the national curriculum which you think pupils would benefit from learning? Heron’s formula? Pick’s Theorem?

I'm scheduled to give a session at the Joint Conference of Mathematics Subject Associations in April.

Aimed at A level Maths teachers wanting to know about university options, esp. for students without A grades. What do students learn? What careers do they do?

For teachers:

Agree or disagree?

The history of mathematics should be a part of the curriculum at KS4/5. One valid criticism of British education is that pupils specialise too early. Exploring the history of maths could provide much-needed cultural breadth.
