I wanted to know more about those turtles!

I hope you know about meiolaniids. They're great.

Extinct horned turtles This fossil skull cast is from a giant horned turtle from an extinct group, the Meiolaniidae, which lived in South America and Australia from around 47 million years ago until recently. It was named after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is believed that they were land-living herbivores, like modern tortoises, and that their head-spikes and tail-clubs could have been used to fight for mates. This specimen, from Lord Howe Island, east of Australia, is from one of the last surviving species in the group. They lived on islands in that region until around 3,000 years ago, so overlapped with the earliest humans on those islands.

I don't recall if I ever posted these on Bluesky, but here's a set of illustrations I made for the Meiolaniidae wikipedia page back when I expanded the information for those animals
The goal was to showcase the overall diversity in cranial ornamentation #sciart
An illustration featuring four species of meiolaniid turtles. Niolamia has large, frill-like horns, Ninjemys smaller horns with a very pointed nose. Warkalania is shown with a knobby but ultimately much more reduced cranial ornamentation while Meiolania has short, recurved horns resembling a cow

Biomechanical skull performance in the meiolaniid Niolamia argentina (Testudinata: Meiolaniidae) using finite element analysis
The use of horns and frills for sexual display and attack has been proposed and demonstrated in extinct taxa on several occasions, with the ceratopsian dinosaurs as the most iconic example. Niolami...

A piece I made last year for the Meiolaniidae wikipedia page. A personal gripe of mine is that oftentimes family pages don't really reflect the diversity of a group in the main image. So I worked to illustrate four very distinct members of the family to show how wild they could get

an illustration of four meiolaniid turtles, in the top left Niolamia is shown with large plate like horns and is orange and brown in coloration, Ninjemys is shown to its right, smaller, green and with a rand stripe across its eyes. It has a long nose horn and smaller horns at the back of its head. Warkalania sits in the bottom left and has sandy colours with a brown, domed head. It's head is bumpy but not really horned. The bottom right is Meiolania platycepts. It is depicted as black with beige scale highlights. It's head is bumpy like that of Warkalania but with large cow like horns that curve backwards.
