Suitor Antinous (Pattinson) and Penelope’s maid Melantho (Goth) smooching and giggling right outside of Penelope‘s domain like two plotting Siamese cats in a Disney movie works like a charm. Antinous (Pattinson) the coward in armor is constantly calculating and egging others to confront Odysseus. 5/

I’m glad you loved 🥰 it.

And thanks for coming back!

I’m not a Homer expert but yeah I’m kind of in that camp.

Even if it wasn’t for all that baggage I still think Mia Goth as Melantho was criminally underused and they could have done so many more interesting things with Samantha Morton.

and you get a sense why the sack of Troy was often depicted as a tragic atrocity in ancient literature (although the movie doesn’t get into the real horrors). Ovid would have loved this version of Circe. And the Melantho-Antinous situationship sets you up to root against them in a reality show way.

Melantho walking into a storage room looking for something and she can hear faint moaning and skin slapping sounds from inside

She's ready to tell the suitor and the maid to leave (if she can't have sex during working hours no one can) when she notices it's a suitor and... Telemachus?

My dream Odyssey hype-appropriation movie is a small-budget 90 minuter MELANTHO where the heroine is a viciously pragmatic young enslaved woman making bold moves and gambling everything, even her life, on a chance at freedom.
another Odyssey point: I think the film's own themes would have been reinforced by more emphasis on *sexual* violence committed by the Greeks, which we only really see referenced in the scene with Circe. This is something very hard to do well but which has plenty of classical reference points.

i agree Melantho likely cut for time. tho tbf in the poem—if i recall correctly—she is not specifically named among slave women Telemachus hangs for crime of being raped by suitors. perhaps Nolan is sticking to the text? to sum up your friend rob sounds like a loudmouthed ignoramus

Im now thinking maybe Prairie Dawn should be Nausicaa. Instead I think I’d have Zoe from Sesame Street as Melantho. And maybe Elmo could be Melanthus.

I feel like Odysseus should be the only human. Penelope should be Miss Piggy, Janice=Calypso. I’m undecided about who Circe should be bc there are not that many female Muppets. Melantho = Prairie Dawn. The Sirens should be Gonzo’s chicken girlfriends, and their song should be chicken bawking.

3) Did Melantho get her comeuppance? I missed it in all the bustle. 🧵

And it makes some great characters boring - Mia Goth’s Melantho- a complex and traitorous slave - has a great snarky speech about Odysseus’ lower station in life in Book 18 of ‘The Odyssey’.

Indulge me while I give it to you in full.

What would I change? I would spare Melantho, but kill all the suitors. Remove the confession scene and make the "are we the baddies?" point differently. Have him travel to appease Poseidon AND the unburied soldiers. Make the Polyphemus scene more like in the poem.

The handling of Melantho is basically the entire movie in miniature. Nolan is clumsily fighting with his own source material, trying to inject his own super-duper-serious themes but unwilling to make chances sufficiently radical to produce something coherent.
August 2, 2026 at 3:19 AM
One other thing: I expected Nolan to just cut the whole disloyal slave-girls bit from the original but the movie actually goes out of its way to show Melantho as a dirty whore who deserves whatever happens to her... and then I think she disappears into thin air during the final battle? Weird.

Saw Odyssey. I liked it but felt like Odysseus could've been a little more actively evil during the actual sack of Troy. He was never going to chuck the baby but still.

Would've fit the "we ruined the World" vibe better if they had Melantho killed off too but Nolan's soft spots likely kicked in.

Re the #Odyssey & the Bechdel-Wallace Test, _technically_ Penelope's line to Melantho, "Surely your place is down there" qualifies, although it's hard not to interpret that as still implicitly being about the men. I'm enjoying Ride or Die, which 2 hrs in has only once reverse-Bechdeled!

Love this on its own, but doubly because I recently read a really excellent sapphic reimagining of Penelope and Melantho.
July 28, 2026 at 6:03 PM
yes, and for all of the complaints about the script/dialogue, i interpret that as nolan trying to subtly signal the actual nature of the relationship between antinous and melantho—not one of romance/fun but rather some unseen negotiation of power/manipulation between two inherently unequal parties
