It's the first without founding drummer Bill Berry who retired to the farm. Stipe, Buck and Mills were forced to reinvent the creative process and shifted from their jangle alt rock to an experimental electronic soundscape.

Thom Yorke, lead singer of Radiohead, has shared a pivotal piece of advice given to him by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe during the band's early years. The advice, which Stipe offered while Radiohead supported R.E.M. on their 1995 'Monster' tour, focused on how to handle fame and public attention. Yorke explained that Stipe noticed him hiding in dressing rooms during tours and encouraged him to engage with the world around him. Stipe's advice was simple: 'If you don't care, they don't care. If you're not looking, they're not looking.' Yorke recounted how Stipe put this advice into practice during a night out in Stockholm, where they visited a busy club and were left undisturbed. The singer reflected on how this guidance helped him navigate the pressures of sudden fame, particularly after Radiohead's breakthrough with 'OK Computer'. Stipe's counsel became especially relevant when Yorke struggled with being treated like 'Jesus' on the street, prompting Stipe to suggest imagining withdrawal from the situation, a concept that later inspired the lyrics of Radiohead's 'How To Disappear Completely' from their 2000 album 'Kid A'. The two musicians maintained a close friendship for over three decades, with Stipe acknowledging Yorke as a trusted confidant in the music industry. They frequently collaborated, including performing 'E-Bow The Letter' together at various events, with Yorke taking the vocal part originally sung by Patti Smith. Stipe also confirmed that the advice he gave to Yorke directly influenced the creation of the song's central refrain. Their relationship endured beyond R.E.M.'s 2011 split, with Stipe even alerting Yorke to the band's decision to disband. This story, shared in a recent Rolling Stone interview with Harry Styles, highlights the enduring mentorship and mutual respect between the two artists, offering insight into how they managed the challenges of fame in the music industry.

Self-motivated as R.E.M. was from the very outset of their career, it is hardly coincidental that the iconoclastic Georgians released their most

The phrase was the slogan of Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods, a diner in Athens, Georgia, that the band frequented. And, that Sputnik-like ornament on the album's cover was part of a sign for the Sinbad Motel in Miami, near where the album was recorded.

Pretty much the whole album deals with the loss of her husband Fred "Sonic" Smith, her brother Todd and close friend Robert Mapplethorpe. The album touches on Smith's close relationship with beat poet Allen Ginsberg, who passed away in April of '97.
