Microsoft Office might be trapped behind a subscription, but OnlyOffice and LibreOffice will let you create and edit documents and spreadsheets for free.

It seems that the free version of Microsoft Copilot used with a business account can't search through your Microsoft files and notes.

Copilot really is an absolute clown show.

We did a migration to open source at one of my previous jobs. That was more than 20 years ago. More than 200 seats.

F Microsoft and F the goat they rode to town on. Alternatives have been around for awhile and they keep getting better.

It's 2026, I've been writing all evening in Word (yeah, I hate it but have to for this book project), and it won't let me copy the text, save the document (it claims my disk is full; I have a free half TB) or even save a new test document.

This never would've happened if we'd just stuck with Emacs.

If the torygraph was doing well it would not have been up for sale for so long
And Microsoft rewards would not keep pushing me to take out a free 12 month subscription.

also: google docs, slides, and sheets are free. microsoft 365 isn't. and with most students on chromebooks, libre office isn't a solution for most school districts either. (tho i did switch to libre office on my work pc when my district dropped microsoft 365 subscriptions for 95% of the staff)

The first one is always free ...

Same long game is played by Microsoft & Co ...

This has always been Google’s long game. They gave away tons of tools for free to embed themselves in school ecosystems. This creates lifelong customers in students and now they’re using this leverage to force schools to use technology that is not in the best interest of kids.
“The company’s new strategy underscores Google’s powerful role in American education. If school leaders want continued student access to search within the company’s ecosystem, they will be forced to embrace Google’s A.I.”

Bingo.

The fact Google, Microsoft, et al are zealously trying to force people to use AI is ample evidence it's a useless product. No one has to be compelled to use something (especially a free something) that has self-evident value.

If AI was any use, people would be demanding it.

They aren't.
Nothing says "We have a good and useful product that people love and are clamoring for" like using mafia-style shakedowns to extort schools into using your product, amirite?
Breaking: Google will turn off web search for schools that ban A.I. for kids.

Smart strategy!
Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Nvidia can’t keep funding the AI bubble forever. Why not get rich democratic nation states to fund them instead.
Reading this after reading the Nerd Reich was disturbing. The techbros despise democracy anyway.

I don't use it much anymore either, but as long as I'm employed, I'm stuck with Microsoft.
I'm retiring in March, so I'll be free of it soon!

Článek How to free your email from the clutches of Google (Gmail) or Microsoft (Outlook) se zabývá tím, jak se osvobodit od e-mailových služeb velkých technologických společností, jako jsou Google (Gmail) a Microsoft (Outlook). Autor upozorňuje, že i když je proces přechodu na jiného poskytovatele e-mailu jednoduchý, většina lidí je zvyklá na pohodlí těchto velkých služeb, což je odvádí od pochopení, jak e-mail funguje.
