"The Nova Scotia government's decisions will have drastic impacts on this province, said Chief Leroy Denny, Co-Chair of the Maw-lukutijik Saqmaq. "Programs and organizations that, for years, the Province and the Mi'kmaq have been partners on, this government decided to claw back or push away from. This is incredibly disappointing." Education, early childhood development, language, health, wellness, economic and community development programs have all been targets of Mikmaw programming cutbacks in this week's budgetary announcement. These programs, organizations and initiatives were not merely trivial projects for the province to cut, they were equity-driven and created to address historic and persistent systemic inequalities that the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia continue to face. Many Mi'kmaw programs, initiatives and organizations were cut 50 to 100 percent. The Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre; our health authority, Tajikeimik; many of our cultural programs and celebrations such as Treaty Day and Mi'kmaw History Month are just examples of important initiatives that lost their funding. It is becoming clear what Premier Houston's position and priorities are, despite saying he wanted to work with the Mi'kmaq upon his election. The Maw-lukutijik Saqmaq question how the Province can decide to defund initiatives developed to support our Nation-to-Nation relationship, yet at the same time claim the initiatives are important enough for them to remain part of these discussions. "This government says they want Nova Scotia to flourish, succeed and grow, and then pull funding for opportunities and projects that have positively impacted us and this province," continued Chief Denny. "Nova Scotians must demand answers and hold the government accountable on where they intend to spend your money, especially if it fails to support the people, communities and priorities that make this province who and what it is…

NOTICE TO OUR COMMUNITY Update on Provincial Program Funding Kwe' to our community in Kjipuktuk and across Mi'kma'ki. Over the past day there have been announcements that the Province of Nova Scotia has restored funding to a number of community programs. We want to clarify that the Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre programs previously identified as facing reductions remain affected at this time. The following programs have not had their funding restored: • Family Resource Program • Youth Outreach Program • A Place to Belong Program • Funding previously received through L'nu Affairs We are grateful to see support reinstated for organizations and services that are important to many L'nu & Nova Scotians generally. However, our program funding has not been reinstated. Critical preventative supports for Indigenous youth and families - including justice system navigation, family support services, and work that helps address and prevent domestic violence - still remain in question and at risk. As previously shared, the loss of this funding means we continue to face staff layoffs and reduced service capacity, which places additional strain on the remaining programs and services delivered by the Centre. We remain committed to advocating for the restoration of these critical supports and will continue to keep our community informed. Wela'lioq for your continued trust. Alan Syliboy’s portrait of Elder Daniel Paul This portrait of Mikmaw Elder Dr. Daniel Paul honours his work as a journalist, educator, activist, and most importantly, as a historian whose ground-breaking book, We Were Not the Savages (first published in 1993) fundamentally challenged colonial understandings of the centuries old relationship of the Mikmaw people to those in the Atlantic region. It was commissioned by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Dalhousie University and painted by Mi'kmaw artist Alan Syliboy in 2023.
