The death toll in Pakistan's Balochistan coal mine explosion has risen to 34 as rescue teams continue searching for trapped miners.

A methane gas explosion at a coal mine on the outskirts of Quetta in Pakistan's Balochistan province killed at least 26 miners on July 30, while rescue teams continued efforts to locate workers still trapped underground, Dunya News reported. The explosion occurred at a coal mine in the Sorange area, where 42 miners were working when the blast triggered a collapse, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Rescue personnel have so far recovered 26 bodies, while the fate of the remaining workers remains uncertain. Emergency teams are continuing search and rescue operations under challenging conditions in an effort to reach those believed to be trapped inside the mine. Balochistan's Minister for Mines and Minerals, Shoaib Noshirwani, said all available resources had been deployed to support the rescue effort despite the difficult environment inside the mine. Expressing condolences to the families of those killed, the minister announced that the provincial government would provide compensation of PKR500,000 ($1,808) to the family of each deceased miner, while injured workers would receive PKR300,000 each. Noshirwani also said a full investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the accident and examine whether safety lapses contributed to the disaster. Earlier, the mine owner told local media that methane gas had caused the explosion. All 42 workers at the site were reportedly from Shangla district in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Following the incident, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti ordered the Mines and Minerals Department to submit an immediate report on the accident. Bugti directed authorities to conduct a transparent inquiry to establish the cause of the explosion and identify any negligence. He said legal action would be taken against those found responsible and instructed the department to strictly enforce mine safety regulations across all coal mining operations in the province.

He was then handed over to medical personnel for immediate assessment and care. Authorities have not yet released his identity. The remaining four villagers who were previously located by divers are still trapped inside the cave, while two others remain missing, adding urgency to the ongoing mission. Rescue teams have been working continuously, including overnight efforts described as continuing until sunrise. However, their progress has been complicated by further rainfall, which has increased water levels inside the cave system despite pumping operations. Supplies including drinking water, soft food, and thermal foil blankets have been delivered to sustain those still trapped. Officials report that one villager managed to escape earlier and alerted authorities, prompting the large-scale rescue response. Efforts are continuing under difficult and unpredictable conditions as teams attempt to safely extract the remaining individuals.

LIMA (Reuters) -Mining in Peru’s northern district of Pataz will be suspended for 30 days, President Dina Boluarte said on Monday, after 13 gold mine workers in the area were kidnapped and killed by illegal miners. Peru’s government also plans to set up a military base and implement a curfew lasting from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the district. "The armed forces will take control of the area where Poderosa operates," Boluarte said. On Sunday, miner Poderosa said that the bodies of 13 workers from a local firm, which held a mining contract with Poderosa, had been recovered by police after they were kidnapped last month. Peru is the world’s third-largest copper producer, but the deposits of the red metal are largely in the south. Gold and silver are mined in the north. Poderosa alleged that nearly 40 people - including contractors and artisanal miners - have been killed recently in Pataz at the hands of criminal gangs. Since 2020, illegal miners have taken over several areas under Poderosa’s control. The area had already been under a state of emergency, with heavy police and military presence, due to the attacks on Poderosa’s operations.
