Nearby, there are houses with garden banks abutting the road. Yesterday, 3 of them were buzzing with dozens of mining bees. Mostly Yellow-legged Mining Bees, but good numbers of Cliff Mining Bees. Best of all was seeing the crowd of Black Oil Beetles.

A nice little find on a grass verge today. A small colony of mining bees, possibly tawny mining bees, which are relatively common in the south of the UK, but were only first recorded in Scotland in 2010.

A colony of mining bees at Hogganfield Loch in the east of Gladgow. These solitary bees dig nests into sandy soil, creating these distinctive piles of excavated sand on the surface.

Yesterday we revisited the local mining bee banks where I previously claimed on iRecord (15.03.26) that there were up to 200 Yellow-legged Mining Bees present. However, this time there were at least 2000 of them, and more banks active. A wonderful sight.

On a local walk, there are a couple of houses fronted by earthy banks which are home to mining bees. They’re currently buzzing with Andrena flavipes, hosts to the Painted Nomad Bee, Nomada fucata. I fear we have bee-bank envy.

Dodgy iPhone photos but mining bees are busy on the verge next to our house.

One might be Ashy Mining Bee (Andrena cineraria), the other I’m not so sure about. A gingery/brown thorax but distinct pale grey bands on the thorax.

Andrena tibialis is widespread but very localised in England north to Yorkshire.
A fairly regular visitor to my S. Cambridgeshire garden each spring.

Cliff Mining Bee, Andrena thoracica, spotted on our walk yesterday. It didn't linger at any flower long enough for me to focus on on, and I didn't have time to try and get better footage as I had to keep up with the others.
