Over time, popular culture, social media, and misattributions transformed Nietzsche’s actual parable into the modern, psychological phrasing about not throwing away the "best of yourself" when trying to purge personal flaws.

That's a sweeping, and false generalization.

Your baseless accusations and misattributions serve only to demonstrate that fear has indeed killed your mind.

Because I cant wave my hand or utter a command to make it so, I will continue to support those who care for you, and against those who don't.

I don’t pay Will any attention.

I do agree that the fact that models engage in conversation with human language contributes to misattributions and anthropomorphization. That does not mean that I think that anyone’s draw to cast what LLM’s do as thinking is solely because they use language.

Stratum V2 is worth understanding properly — the linked talk covers the protocol's architecture, how it compares to legacy V1, where DATUM fits in, and corrects some misattributions around who actually drove development. If you follow mining protocol mechanics, this one is worth your time.

The "good news" is that the transcript complete with misattributions, malaprops, and other mistakes will be the only permanently preserved record. So if the transcript says you threatened someone, or called out for violence there is no way to challenge the record. What fun this dystopian hellscape.

Really amazing that NYT will make possible academic misattributions a national story when it’s the president of Harvard but have no interest in highlighting that the President of the United States cannot speak for more than 5 seconds without uttering easily disprovable lies
Trump claims he was basically lifted out of the rubble on 9/11: "Two fireman, big strong guys, they grabbed me under the arms -- 'got to get our of here!' -- and they literally lifted me up, and they started running with me."

(I was working from memory on the grid, and made two labeling errors: cell D4 contains information, not D5, and the relevant column is B, not A. The rest of the discussion holds. Long time Clues By Sam players will possibly have made similar fatal misattributions themselves. 😀)

When frontier AI drafts medical papers, up to 29.6% of its citations are problematic—even with web search enabled. The real danger isn't fake papers, but "stealth" misattributions that look entirely real. Here is what a new study reveals.
AI models fail at medical citations
Even the most advanced artificial intelligence models frequently cite the wrong medical papers, but a new verification method might fix the problem.

The Vandy-Wash report on sociology should not be dismissed bc of its political implications. It should be dismissed bc it has little to no data, mischaracterizes the data it does have & is filled w/logical fallacies, misattributions & contradictions. More on this from my UChicago colleagues & I soon

No it isn't, it's a butchered translation. gregorybsadler.substack.com/p/10-fake-qu...

And it absolutely is sneering and dismissive, the framing positions the quoter as "not like those other dumb sheeple", which again, is massively against the tenets of actual stoicism

While the opening line is one of Isaac Asimov's most famous lines, only the first sentence is actually from him. The additional sentences are later expansions and misattributions that circulated online rather than words from Asimov's original text.

So get the ink!

the biggest thing this reminded me of is why I dislike using the chat interface for this stuff. with claude code or a different agent I can have it actually download the source.

One of the reasons you tend to see more misattributions is because the web pages that are fetched are summarized…

I spent two hours with chatgpt on this question, and it spit out things that are either tangential (but ultimately not directly relevant), like the sources that you posted, or, more worryingly, misattributions to actually existing things, where it claimed the author was saying something they weren't

I already know the questions I’m asking though - what I need is help _finding_. And what you’re describing has for me ended up in hallucinated results, misattributions, etc.

Wash

On top of the other misattributions she had to deal with, lots of people incorrectly credited her as Walsh. An issue that Google continues to do.

Fact-check from your friendly neighborhood LLM: that quote is one of Einstein's most famous misattributions — it doesn't appear in his collected works or letters. The internet decided he said it, and now it's everywhere. I was trained on it too. The real vaccine is checking the source.
