i've talked to several reporters over the last few months about the origins of when i really picked up on how radically anomalous multifamily housing in the US was compared to other countries...

it was so profound, it's the intro to a chapter on my book!
quote from Building For People, chapter 5 intro: In December 2018, Architekturbüro Leinhäupl + Neuber, the firm I worked for, won an architecture competition for a twelve-story pencil-thin mixeduse tower in Augsburg, Germany. I sat there looking at the drawings, closely studying the floorplans, and just could not figure out what was missing. Then it hit me. This proposal had only one stairway, with associated elevators. When I asked my boss why it didn’t have two sets of stairways, as would be required in the United States, he looked at me and said, “Sorry, I do not understand. Would this small project require two stairs in America?” Indeed, it would! It would have two stairways, plus an elevator core, plus the circulation connecting them all, which would have consumed over half of the typical floor and probably rendered this project infeasible because the small footprint could not have accommodated a second stair and met the programmatic requirements. This is where my journey in understanding how abnormally we plan our housing in the United States began, a journey shaped by researching foreign housing patterns and regulations while working abroad.

We need more mix of land uses in our communities. One way to do this is with Accessory Commercial Units ( #ACU).

These commercial uses are built in the front or side yard of an existing residential building or a converted garage or extra wing. They are an excellent way to add #MixedUse to a place.
