thinking about the GNOME issue someone filed over not being able to set custom modelines w/ mutter and one of the devs just saying “replace the monitor” lol

it's surprisingly immersive until you get to parts where the game takes advantage of the fact it's 640 x 480 and things become unreadable

but it's oh so worth it after you figure out the proper modelines for it

AdvanceMame on MS-DOS 6.22

Pictured is advv, a tool to create custom modelines.
The white box is the menu of the CRT, confirming the 59.1hz.

This would be the modeline for Metal Slug, which had 320x244 @ 59.19

It's as close to the real deal as you can get.
Last update for AdvMame was in May '25.

ok so niri does not support custome modelines. hyprland worked fine though.

sadly the scrolling plugin for hyprland seems to be archived now...

I hand-generated modelines for CRT monitors before VESA became standard.
Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch, I was there when it was written

Just fiddling around in emacs today and I'm actually really pleased with this theme. I think the mango modelines are particularly slick
Made an cohost theme for emacs!

I think Linux will probably solve the problem because it allows you to force display modelines. But that's a project, and I'll probably have to swap parts between computers, possibly move stuff around, and then troubleshoot..

Will get to it, eventually. 🙂

Daily #vim / #neovim tip 22/31
:h modeline

You've probably seen these in some files:

# vi:noai:sw=3 ts=6
/* vim: set ai tw=75: */

These are called *modelines*.
Vim will parse modeline settings in beginning or end of the file and automatically set those options to current buffer.

It was a great video, but watching you go through Xconfigurator gave me flashbacks.

Writing modelines manually in your xconfig *shudder*
