Crews razed the historic Modernaire Motel in Springettsbury Township to make way for Mount Zion Commons, a mixed-use development featuring retail, dining, and apartments. The motel's iconic neon sign has been preserved at a local museum.
Historic Modernaire Motel demolished to make way for redevelopment
Aug. 11, 2026, 9:43 a.m. ET The former Modernaire Motel building in Springettsbury Township was demolished on August 11. A mixed-use development called Mount Zion Commons will be built at the site. The motel's iconic neon sign was preserved and is now on display at a local museum. The former Modernaire Motel building crumbled into the dust of history early on Aug. 11. Demolition crews razed the Springettsbury Township landmark for a planned mixed-use development at a busy intersection. The main motel building was the final significant structure of an L-shaped series of more than 10 buildings that border Mt. Zion Road and East Market Street. The Modernaire Motel was built in the late 1940s, catering to travelers along the Lincoln Highway before Route 30, running parallel to the Lincoln Highway, funneled through traffic around York City and surrounding suburbs. The hotel's iconic neon roadside sign was preserved, restored and is on display at the York County History Center's Agricultural and Industrial Museum. The nearby Bloomingdale Mansion was demolished on Aug. 4. Madison Development Group, Inc. will build Mount Zion Commons at the site, which will include a Wawa, a restaurant, retail space and apartments. >> Want to stay up to date on the latest news? Hi, Kim! Almost! Andre Cymone was with Prince in his early days, a friend, played bass. The one in my show is soooo bass! But I think you’re thinking of Dez Dickerson who was with Prince/Revolution especially 1999, & he played “Modernaire” in Purple Rain! I’ve played that tune too, I love it so.

Demolition of the historic Bloomingdale Mansion in Springettsbury Township paves the way for Mount Zion Commons, a mixed-use development featuring apartments, retail space, and a Wawa.
Bloomingdale Mansion’s Springettsbury Twp. legacy ends with demolition
Aug. 4, 2026, 9:50 a.m. ET The last chapter of the Bloomingdale Mansion in Springettsbury Township was written into history Aug. 4, 2026 after it was demolished. Demolition of the mid 19th century, large white house at 3405 E. Market St. is one of several historic structures, including the Modernaire Motel, that will be razed for a mixed-use redevelopment project. Madison Development Group, Inc. wants to build Mount Zion Commons, which would include a Wawa, a restaurant, retail space and apartments on that corner. Rob Frey's great-great-grandfather, Charles Weiser, purchased 37 acres in 1848 for a summer estate in what is now Springettsbury Township. His sons, Charles S. Weiser and John A. Weiser, built houses on the property, according to local historian Stephen H. Smith. The Bloomingdale house, built in 1887 or earlier, and the estate received its name from Charles S. Weiser, Frey's great-grandfather and one of Springettsbury Township's most prominent residents. The Weisers were bankers and business owners, Smith wrote. This is a developing story. Demolition of iconic Modernaire Motel site begins in Springettsbury
Aug. 3, 2026, 9:46 a.m. ET Demolition of the former Modernaire Motel and other buildings for a planned mixed-use development at a busy intersection in Springettsbury Township began Monday morning. At 8:52 a.m., a John Deere 350 excavator fitted with a demolition claw moved into position to tear down the house just east of the motel. A smaller machine moved behind the garage on the property at 3321 East Market Street. At 8:57 a.m., the larger machine took a bite out of the side of the building, causing a cascade of vinyl siding, clapboard and insulation, a large cloud of dust wafting from the debris. The Tamco Construction Co, a woman-owned contractor from Doylestown with more than 20 years experience, according to its website, is doing the demolition. The township recently received more than 10 demolition permit applications for properties at the corner of East Market Street and Mount Zion Road, township manager Mark Hodgkinson said. Madison Development Group, Inc. wants to build Mount Zion Commons, which would include a Wawa, a restaurant, retail space and apartments on that corner. Township supervisors approved conditional use modifications for the project in March 2024. It falls in the municipality's town center overlay, which has special requirements for development. The land development plans are scheduled to go before the planning commission on Thursday, Aug. 20, Hodgkinson said. The plans are tentatively scheduled to go to the board of supervisors for final approval on Thursday, Aug. 27, he said. Efforts to redevelop the busy intersection have been underway for years. Nearly a decade ago, another developer proposed a shopping center in the same spot, but the township turned down a rezoning request. The public has raised concerns about traffic, pollution and noise related to the proposed redevelopment. Residents also have expressed concerns about the potential loss of historic buildings. The Modernaire Motel was built in 1949. Its neon sign was recently restored and now hangs in the York County History Center's Agricultural & Industrial Museum. The Bloomingdale home, which dates to the 1800s, also would be torn down under the proposed plans. This is a developing story. Check back for updates and more photos and videos.
