Prior Matija, a Romani monk from the Balkans who, after recieving a mystical vision, joined the Franciscans as a friar and eventually made his way to northern France. He was then compelled to switch to a cloistered order, and joined the Cistercian abbey where my story takes place :]

Isn't this based on an actual manuscript? IIRC, a cat left an ink pawprint on the page, and there were some margin notes lamenting it? (I might be conflating this a little with general monkposting from other manuscripts)
