My pollinator garden is pollinating 😍

A patch of wild bermagot & mountain mint in bloom along with golden rod yet to bloom. A fun native plant trifecta that keeps themselves upright with no flopping over. A few bumblebees enjoy dinner as the sun sets #Monardafistulosa

First year of our native pollinator garden. Black-eyed Susans, bee balm, mountainmint, misflower, and amsonia 🌱

We got out early yesterday, trying to beat the worst of the heat. Cane Creek Mountains are in the extreme drought zone & it was apparent in the dearth of blooms. We did see these two: Sericocarpus linifolius (Narrowleaf Whitetop Aster) & Pycnanthemum tenuifolium (Narrowleaf Mountainmint) 1/2

Status update on the pollinator garden 🌱
August 12, 2023 at 9:28 PM
As expected, the bluestars are the first to bloom in the native garden. The mountainmint is already waist-high with the bee balm, and Black-eyed Susans are right behind it. There are mounds of mistflower ready to take over the garden 🌱

💮 loomis' mountainmint 🌿
Pycnanthemum loomisii

best guess based on ranges & other observations; i didn't get any seeds so of course it is impossible to differentiate this from its two otherwise identical sisters species 🙄

This sumac cellophane-cuckoo bee was having a hard time getting the pollen off its tongue today. Maybe the bee equivalent of having food stuck in your teeth? #bees #BugSky

Checking out the bustling pollinator business out back. Saw this huge dude in the mountainmint, blurry video still was enough to identify as a CLUBBED MYDAS FLY! Native to the region. It’s a mimic and really confused me at first lol

Pycnanthemum tenuifolium (Slender #Mountainmint). #Native to eastern NA. Grows in dry, open woods, prairies as well as stream banks. Has narrow, simple leaves. Small white flowers grow at the end of the stems. Gives a faint #minty fragrance when crushed. Great for #pollinators!

Playing paparazzi to the bumblebees and butterflies enjoying our native(ish) plants: mountain mint and purple coneflower.

Bonus: no insect was harmed and also no Mickey was harmed, YAY!

Wildflowers on the last day of August 2026. Nature carries on.

Went for a short walk in the Alston Quarter behind our house. One of the roads for the hunt club is coming back as a Piedmont prairie. This Pycnanthemum (probably pycnanthemoides but could be incanum) was a microhabitat for many arthropods 1/n

its still too hot to think but I did a yard circuit to stake floppers from last nights storm. noticed the narrow leaf mountainmint is BUSY! Finally has a lot of blooms, there’s a constant buzz of tiny little guys and bigger waspy guys just haloing the plant so I’m taking all the dopamine I can

I took off work yesterday and spent the afternoon pulling weeds, transplanting these swamp milkweeds & a clustered mountain mint. I quickly rigged up the rabbit-proof fence even tho I don’t have the right fence posts yet. catbirds kept me company THE WHOLE TIME.

We hit a highlight at our first stop, Gentiana autumnalis, Pine Barren Gentian, but I also love the delicate Pycnanthemum flexuosum (Savanna Mountainmint) blossoms, like small fireworks 3/n
October 9, 2023 at 10:46 AM
We also saw early summer wildflowers, especially on the trail up to the ridge --such a lovely array of colors 4/n

A couple more great pollinator plants: #MountainMint And #CulversRoot

Two favorites of the season for me are Ageratina aromatica
(Smaller White Snakeroot) and Conoclinium coelestinum (Blue Mistflower). Pycnanthemum pycnanthemoides (Southern Mountainmint) was past its prime but smelled lovely 5/n

Stayed local today, but I still forget names and look up some of these every year haha (also I just started using iNat! Don’t judge)
