Today in #MultilingualDH: I just learned that zsh, unlike bash, can iterate over non-Latin Alphabets!

```
for letter in {أ..ي}; do
echo $letter
done
Our #TrainingTuesday campaign is back!
This lesson from Programming Historian will provide an introduction to analyzing non-English and multilingual text (that is, text written in more than one language) using Python.
I'll throw in a #MultilingualDH suggestion with the 2023 Finnish Eurovision entry.
I was on the audience end of a different talk and Q&A in Japanese with machine translation, and I really appreciate this reflection on what it changes for the presenter.
My first attempt to learn Python (in library school) was under Python 2, and it was beyond frustrating that the data I wanted to work with (Cyrillic) involved all kinds of elaborate workarounds to not get mangled from the start. I gave up for nearly a decade. #MultilingualDH
an example of why multicultural aspects are important even in very technical stuff like programming , is how Python 2.0 would become a fucking disaster if you typed anything in a non-Latin language and break itself into not even running
I love a good #MultilingualDH corpus!
Your university library may have a form (or you can send an email) to request cataloging open access online resources. Consider filling it out to help make non-English corpora more findable!
Interested by a corpus of 19th/early 20th c. French for your research?
Here's the French corpus of 11K! novels I tried to curate during my PhD 😅, now live at JOHD, and downloadable on Zenodo!
@awinkler Es sollte andersherum sein :-) aktuell ist die Standardeinstellung ensure_ascii=True. Alle die das nicht möchten, müssen mit ensure_ascii=False aktiv dagegen angehen.
I've been invited to give a keynote (my first!) at the Transkribus User Conference. I wanted to attend this conference for a long time, so being able to join in this role is a special honor to me. Hope to see many of you in Passau! #digitalhumanities #multilingualism #multilingualdh #textrecognition
Is AI leaving non-Latin scripts behind?
Alíz Horváth joins us as Keynote speaker at #TUC2026 to discuss the gap in non-Latin script support and the future of inclusive text recognition!
Interesting #MultilingualDH piece on what gets lost in translation in AI-generated podcasts.
NotebookLM translates any language (I tested Norwegian, African American Vernacular English, and early 1800s English) to 21st century Standard American English in a midwest accent, and the cultural context is either exoticised or ignored, with puns and local context lost and US assumptions added.
Wonderful #MultilingualDH write-up on automatic speech transcription!
We tested OpenAI’s Whisper on 1,847 Holocaust testimonies from the Fortunoff at Yale. It achieved 85% accuracy, but the errors reveal how AI struggles in this domain. Full findings: https://wjbmattingly.com/blog/transcribing-holocaust-testimonies-in-yale-s-fortunoff-archive
I remember loving that this site existed, pointing students to it, and suggesting things (like the #MultilingualDH addition!) On the infrastructure side, there were clear, simple instructions on how to get started while I was still struggling to wrap my head around how Jekyll worked & liquid syntax.
Last week's assignment was to create a data set from your life, but Celine Heck took it a step further and embroidered it too! This is her caffeinated beverage intake for the week. Chinese was easier than Latin for embroidering the labels, a #MultilingualDH win on top of it all! #DHmakes
Maybe the first step is simply making sure the scores match the comments. Anyway. Curious if others have seen similar things in conference reviews.
I am absolutely losing it as I fill out the form to get this added to our library catalogue, and my closest options for topic from their controlled vocabulary are "American Literary Studies" and "British and Commonwealth Literary Studies". #MultilingualDH
An excellent thread if you're ready to break out of the monolingual world of English. You can also learn some great tricks we know in area studies, like how to get something out of a talk that's about something in a language you don't speak. Come join us! #MultilingualDH
Friends with a new, renewed, or amplified interest in the Spanish language and Latin America, consider checking out the work your colleagues/neighbors in departments of Spanish/Romance Languages/Modern Languages/etc--they're likely in the corner of an old campus building 1/
Great #MultilingualDH food for thought, reflecting on global Englishes, the afterlives of British colonial education, and how that intersects with what writing is judged to be "human".
