RSS is, and I say this without hyperbole, an incredibly useful tool for psychological independence in the current environment. Newsblur, as Vajra suggests, is good, I use Feedbin, there are others. Most remarkably easy to set up.
Speaking of the well-deserved death of social media, I've started using Newsblur as my new RSS reader (had to clean up a depressingly large number of dead links, including to sites that still publish but no longer have RSS feeds) and that does still in fact provide a source of good internet

After Google Reader was shut down I started an account with NewsBlur. All these years later it's still around. Tbh I didn't expect it would be, it's just one guy as far as I know

I'm looking into RSS for it as well, I'm hoping that will be a future feature. For now, I'd recommend tools like Kill the Newsletter and NewsBlur to create your own RSS feeds.

There are many good RSS readers. I've been paying for Newsblur since 2011, and consider the $36 I send them every year to be a very good investment:

Shout out to @chanda.blacksky.app for recommending people start the day with an RRS feed instead of doomscrolling. I settled on newsblur, mostly because I didn't want to set up my own server and needed an easy to set up program with an easy GUI. Happy with it so far!

I use and like Inoreader. I’ve also heard good things about NewsBlur

My favorite RSS Reader rn is this one.
rssguard.com

It is an application that runs on your 'puter. Just the way I like it.

If you prefer a web app that you can log into using all your phones and tablets try NewsBlur or Inoreader tho.

@WeirdWriter I have a script that does that automatically from my NewsBlur feed https://codeberg.org/tante/newsblur2masto
It would be very easy to port that to an RSS feed.

We need to fight the enshittification of the internet, and one of the best tools we still have is RSS. In a good reader like Newsblur you can read anything without ads.

Aw geeze, and just a little over to the right, past Newsblur (still use, still excellent, give them money) is... Mint. RIP and fuuuuuuck youuuuuuu Intuit.

LJ and DW, I may have to fight through some feelings to delete. This, however, is a mercy killing.

Feedbin, Inoreader, NewsBlur, FreshRSS, iCloud or Local - Feedler pulls every account into one beautiful native iOS reader. No more juggling apps.

Now in open beta on TestFlight for a limited time

Ever since Google Reader died, I started using a site/app called Newsblur. It still lets me follow RSS feeds of news and blog sites, but you’re correct that a lot of them disappeared when Reader got canned.

This is a great guide to old tech that's becoming increasingly essential to using the net. I've been using Newsblur for years and can back up the recomendation for it here.
Newsletter: In a media landscape dominated by algorithmic feeds that aim to manipulate and extract, sometimes the most radical thing you can do is choose to read what you want, when you want, without anyone watching over your shoulder.

Here’s how to use RSS.

I use Inoreader. @doctorow.pluralistic.net uses Newsblur. We both used Google Reader before it was stabbed to death by the enshittificatory process. Read about RSS and how it's great! pluralistic.net/2026/03/07/r...
