Valentines day next month, these two galaxies are fairly attracted to each other.. gravitationally at least.

NGC4038 and NGC4039 - known as antennae galaxies. They've been together for about a billion years.

A ground-based telescopic view (left) of the collision between the galaxies NGC4038 and NGC4039 reveals long arcing insect-like "antennae" of luminous matter flung from the scene of the accident. Investigators using the Hubble Space Telescope to sift through the cosmic wreckage near the two galaxy cores have recently announced the discovery of over a thousand bright young clusters of stars - the result of a burst of star formation triggered by the collision. The green outline shows the area covered by the higher resolution Hubble image (right). At the distance of the Antennae galaxies (about 63 million light-years), a pixel in this image corresponds to about 15 light-years. Dust clouds around the two galactic nuclei give them a dimmed and reddened appearance while the massive, hot, young stars of the newly formed clusters are blue. How do colliding galaxies evolve with time? Determining the ages of star clusters formed in galaxy collisions can provide significant clues. The Antennae galaxies are seen in the southerly constellation Corvus.

Well I might not have got any meteors on camera last night but its not a total loss. This cosmic train wreck is two colliding galaxies spraying gas, dust and probably stars and planets off into intergalactic space. it was hard to see the wispy debris trails due to the bright moon.
The 'Antenna Galaxies', NGC4039 & NGC4038 busy having a collision. All that universe they they both want the same bit! If you look carefully at the point where the two galaxies converge you can see two trails of dust, gas & probably stars and planets being flung away by the gravitational forces. These are the Antennae that give this object its name. The moon was very bright so these trails are pretty washed out. I'm planning to try again from a dark sky site. Tech Stuff : Scope - Skywatcher Quattro 200P FL800mm F4 Camera : ZWO ASI533C Pro Filter : Baader Neodymium light pollution filter 190 x 30 second exposures - the short exposure time limits the over exposure of the galactic cores but doesn't bring out the 'antennae' very well. A darker sky will help with that.
