Valentines day next month, these two galaxies are fairly attracted to each other.. gravitationally at least.

NGC4038 and NGC4039 - known as antennae galaxies. They've been together for about a billion years.

That's commitment!

1/ Hunting down objects like the pair of NGC4038 and NGC4039 interacting galaxies (also known as Ring-Tail or Antennae galaxies), from my geographic location and with my current equipment, is truly a challenge and requires some serious stubbornness. 🔭

Do star clusters form when galaxies collide? Quite possibly, according to Hubble Space Telescope observations of the "Antennae", two galaxies thought to be in the early stages of a collision. As NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 slowly merge, the combined gravity of each pulls the other apart, huge gas clouds collide, and new bright stars and dark dust are dispersed. Many blue knots of stars appear to be newly formed globular clusters. Red star knots are particularly interesting, as they might be globular clusters that have not yet expelled early dust from their system. The above picture is centered around the smaller of the two interacting galaxies: NGC 4039. The color contrast in the above three-color mosaic was chosen to highlight extended features.

Last image from the morning by the s50. Decided to see if I could get a better observation of #C60 / #ngc4038 & #ngc4039 #theantennaegalaxies. #seestar #s50 #space #astronomy #amateur
C60 / NGC 4038 & NGC 4039 The Antennae Galaxies - telescope processed image. These are two spiral galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) currently merging, a process that began hundreds of millions of years ago. C60 / NGC 4038 & NGC 4039 The Antennae Galaxies - unprocessed image. Their "antennae" are long streamers of stars and gas ejected by gravitational forces, stretching far beyond the original galaxies.

A ground-based telescopic view (left) of the collision between the galaxies NGC4038 and NGC4039 reveals long arcing insect-like "antennae" of luminous matter flung from the scene of the accident. Investigators using the Hubble Space Telescope to sift through the cosmic wreckage near the two galaxy cores have recently announced the discovery of over a thousand bright young clusters of stars - the result of a burst of star formation triggered by the collision. The green outline shows the area covered by the higher resolution Hubble image (right). At the distance of the Antennae galaxies (about 63 million light-years), a pixel in this image corresponds to about 15 light-years. Dust clouds around the two galactic nuclei give them a dimmed and reddened appearance while the massive, hot, young stars of the newly formed clusters are blue. How do colliding galaxies evolve with time? Determining the ages of star clusters formed in galaxy collisions can provide significant clues. The Antennae galaxies are seen in the southerly constellation Corvus.

A stunning ground-based image of the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039) colliding approximately 60 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus. The image showcases the galaxies' interaction, revealing vibrant star-forming regions, extended arcing structures, and the effects of gravitational tidal forces spanning over 500,000 light-years. Narrowband data highlights the red glow of atomic hydrogen gas.

Well I might not have got any meteors on camera last night but its not a total loss. This cosmic train wreck is two colliding galaxies spraying gas, dust and probably stars and planets off into intergalactic space. it was hard to see the wispy debris trails due to the bright moon.
The 'Antenna Galaxies', NGC4039 & NGC4038 busy having a collision. All that universe they they both want the same bit! If you look carefully at the point where the two galaxies converge you can see two trails of dust, gas & probably stars and planets being flung away by the gravitational forces. These are the Antennae that give this object its name. The moon was very bright so these trails are pretty washed out. I'm planning to try again from a dark sky site. Tech Stuff : Scope - Skywatcher Quattro 200P FL800mm F4 Camera : ZWO ASI533C Pro Filter : Baader Neodymium light pollution filter 190 x 30 second exposures - the short exposure time limits the over exposure of the galactic cores but doesn't bring out the 'antennae' very well. A darker sky will help with that.

C60 / NGC 4038 & C61 / NGC 4039 The Antennae Galaxies - telescope processed image. Their nickname comes from two long, wispy streamers of stars and gas, spanning hundreds of thousands of light-years, ejected by gravity. C60 / NGC 4038 & C61 / NGC 4039 The Antennae Galaxies - unprocessed image. The collision triggers a "starburst," creating billions of new stars and thousands of massive "super star clusters" in the wreckage.

NGC 4038 and 4039 - Antennae Galaxies - telescope processed image. These merging spiral galaxies are famous for two long "antennae" of stars and gas ejected by intense tidal forces during their ongoing collision. The collision has triggered a "starburst" period, creating billions of new stars and massive clusters within dense clouds of interstellar gas.

NGC 4038 and 4039 - Antennae Galaxies - telescope processed image.
