Pamblo Cheif of the Nisenan here in Nevada City, CA. He is honored at the Uba Seo. 15 years after CA became a state in 1850 85% of the Indigenous CA Tribes were eliminated, but 99% of the Nisenan were. In 1950, the federal government refused to recognize them as a Tribe. They are still here!

What traditional native lands are you on today?

Sacramento, California is on the traditional lands of the Miwok and Nisenan people.

Antioch, Ca is on the lands of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan, Me-Wuk and Miwok people.

My home was all #Nisenan territory between #Sacramento the #Buttes #Chico #LakeTahoe and #Folsom

New world maps were for resource grabs. This one - showing what we lost - is a tribute to the first people.

American River
(it's Native name was Kum sayo, from the Nisenan)
My favorite Twitter prompt was "RT this with your home river," so reskeet this with your home river.

Mine is the Patuxent.

My home is on land long held by the Miwok and Nisenan people, who have never left, ceded, or ceased to care for it. #indigenouspeoplesday
I live on Chumash land. They lived on this land for over 10,000 years before the European invasion.
It's Indigenous People's Day. Whose land are you on?

I live on the Duwamish Tribe's land and they're still not federally recognized.

Walking #NativeIrisTrail in #Eugene last Saturday, watched a pair of Acorn #Woodpeckers work this snag and fend off an invading squirrel. Learned the bulbs of these purple flowers are called #Ookow and were food eaten by the Maidu and Nisenan American Native cultures.

@meganrenoir.bsky.social & Shelly Covert’s “Recognition as Resilience” features the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe (NCRNT), a nation not federally recognized, and how their resilience creates a “new normal” that reflects tribal self-determination. 🗃️
Recognition as Resilience: How an Unrecognized Indigenous Nation is Using Visibility as a Pathway Toward Restorative Justice
Abstract. Resilience has been conceptualized within international development as the ability to “return to a state of equilibrium” after exogenous shocks.

Land back, baby!

The Nisenan tribe are almost halfway to their goal of buying back their land, and somebody is going to match some donations made during the next week, so please if you can spare anything, every bit counts.
