#nodosaurs
Goal for this year: Reach expert level at depicting Nodosaurs/ankylosaurs. Small sketch from last night but expect plenty more paleoart of them 😁

And here's a bird's-eye view of the four nodosaurs found in the Iberian Peninsula. From left to right: Struthiosaurus, Polacanthus, Europelta, and Dracopelta.

#SurvivingEarth Episode 4 observations:
* Not in the control of the production, but subtitlers called the nodosaurs "Nothosaurus" and the pliosaurs "Pliosaurus"
* Would production teams STOP GIVING MARINE REPTILES WHALESONG?? Please???

Nodosaurs and Ankylosaurs, so much fun to see finished, a nightmare full of nooks, spikes, and plates to design. But you learn a lot in the process.

I love designing nodosaurs, they are a nightmare because osteoderms take a lot of work, but they are so much fun to make. As for Iguanodon, well, you have to love that animal, we have no other option

They are perhaps most famous for their extensive osteodermal #armour plating, which is very similar to that of #ankylosaur dinosaurs, particularly nodosaurs such as #Gastonia. However, aetosaurs independently evolved this morphology many millions of years before in the Triassic.

It's a common mistake in depictions of Ankylosaurus to give it a row of spikes on each side. In reality, this is a trait of nodosaurs, which WERE a group of ankylosaurs, but one Ankylosaurus did not belong to. Notably, nodosaurs lacked tail clubs.

"Nodosaurs can make for ideal farm hands all year round, but it’s during harvest times that they really shine. Perfectly at home slowly ambling down rows of crops, their wide, low stance allows them to comfortably carry...

Nodosaurs deserve more respect. No tail clubs but they went ornate with the spikes

Europelta was also the basis for a small musculature study, something I rarely see for nodosaurs. It's based on the one Matt Dempsey did for Stegosaurus, and I tried to adapt it to this animal. I hope it worked!

I collect Ankylosaurs partly by routine. It's been my favorite dinosaur since childhood, and over the years family members defaulted to that for gifts. I'd go nuts and broke trying to collect every Ankylosaurus trinket I see, but I'll occasionally buy a cheap one for myself. Nodosaurs also count!

Looks like it's OK to share parts of my new Scientific American #paleoart. The theme is "old vs. new" restorations of #dinosaur horns and armour: cue stereotyped past and progressive modern takes on Borealopelta, Stegosaurus and Triceratops. Full artworks: www.scientificamerican.com/article/dino...

This is the illustration for Polacanthus, a nodosaur described in 1865, but about which we also don't have much information. Much better known are some relatives of the clade it namesake, Polacanthinae, whose position and relationship with the rest of the nodosaurs is still debated

You can tell the difference between Nodosaurs and Ankylosaurs by the tails. Nodosuars don't have the clubs at the end, and they also have narrower heads. My printed authorities also tell me they may have made honking sounds.

And of my favourite kind of dinosaur, I love the nodosaurs, like ankylosaur

Wait, is this another “I have no unique experiences as an autistic/ADHD sexual & gender minority type person” things? Is love of nodosaurs and ankylosaur another sign?

It's hard to find anything like this about nodosaurs online, so I decided to do it with Europelta. The basis was Matt Dempsey's muscle study for Stegosaurus. It's not the same animal, but it's a thyreophore, and it's the only reliable reference I could find.

The "knobbed lizard" #Nodosaurus has been the namesake for its entire clade of armoured dinosaurs since 1890. Despite being poorly known compared to some of its close relatives unearthed in the past 100 years, it holds the clade name due to precedence rules by the ICZN.

Wikipedia devotes a lot of article to how they had FIVE different types of osteoderms and then goes off on a tangent about different types of sacral shields (something I didn't know about), and it mentions nodosaurs having a hyoid bone (another thing I didn't know). This is just cool.
April 5, 2024 at 10:25 PM
Still hungry, the Iguanodon notices some plants in a cave/canyon, and with no nodosaurs to killsteal, goes for it - but what's this? The aspect ratio is changing? And why the bones?
