NSSR, liberal studies!
December 8, 2025 at 1:03 PM
It is the Duke University Press of University of Chicagos!

I joke, but it is impressive. There's a comparison to draw with NSSR, to which so many are emotionally attached.

What's happening at the New Schoool is not just budget cuts. It's a wholesale scrapping and selling NSSR and Lang off for parts.

I just signed this letter as an alum. The students write, "The values of NSSR are of crucial importance in this political moment...The New School administration is taking a DOGE-style approach—antidemocratic, fast, furious, and reckless, accelerating the demise of critical thought from within."

realizing it’s not just administrators’ salaries that are sucking the life out NSSR but that they spent 800k to get Busta Rhymes to play a failed fundraiser (a fact I learned from @kmunro-econ.bsky.social) is just too fucking much.

get me out of this badly written satirical novel.

With everything else going on, I almost forgot to share the new, relaunched website for the Department of Economics at the NSSR. We are a small department committed to a pluralist, critical, and technically rigorous approach to economic analysis. #EconSky

She just moved there from the NSSR. Exciting new project!

Aditi Dey (NSSR) presented a fine-grained history of tech entrepreneurialism in Bangalore – the "Silicone Valley" of India – and its emergence from trends in state development

NSSR, and graduate student workers at the New School more broadly, are a Problem (if you're among the various neoliberal or reactionary members of management): they organize, are socially conscious, make demands of the University to actually uphold values plastered all over marketing materials. 2/

I didn't go to NSSR, but while at The New School I worked in the NSSR library and learned a lot just by seeing what books the PhD students checked out in the incredible Fogelman library archive. Really a gigantic loss if the program truly goes under.

I was a postdoc at NSSR in 2010-12 and taught undergrads and grad students. I’m anxious on behalf of everyone currently seeking an education or a livelihood at the new school.

To be fair, both TD:LTD and now NSSR are sequels that are going to include the character types that were prominently in the prior versions.

I am glad, though, that Miis are in fact doable in NSSR!

well, the cat's out of the bag. and thanks to TNS AAUP's statement, a lot more to discuss about the political, anti-worker, anti-student impetus for what are—no matter what TNS leadership may claim—concrete steps toward closing NSSR and many other critically oriented programs at the New School. 1/

I really hope all these noteworthy speakers understand that the NSSR is being dismantled and that most of the faculty who will be around to host this "festival of ideas" are facing the threat of immediate job loss, including tenured and tenure-track faculty.

in 2012 I finished a Mellon postdoc at NSSR and, during exit interview w/then-dean, suggested they hired me TT. The dean seemed to take it seriously, but said "we're not really hiring traditional scholars; we'd rather hire people whose expertise can tent-peg cash-cow MA programs." (I paraphrase)

all that without even noting that the NSSR faculty working group prepared proposals for streamlining costs, merging departments – essentially, internally managing austerity, but without disrupting doctoral studies. all such proposals weren't presented to the BOT until just before their vote. 5/

I started my study of shock-doctrine politics and austerity as a master’s student at the NSSR exactly 20 years ago, focusing on Iraq War reconstruction but surely shaped by the school’s own ongoing controversies,

funnily enough, I attended a cash cow MA program at NSSR 2 decades ago, BUT I learned a lot because I took many classes in the traditional programs with great faculty!

As an NSSR alum this makes me fucking livid. I’m so sorry you’re all getting hit with this. The New School is an important place and it’s just being destroyed by neoliberal bullshit.

Glad to see that New School for Social Research faculty (and, I hope, other New School divisions, too?) have pledged solidarity with striking student workers! Close to 90% of all teaching at TNS is done by contingent and student workers! www.instagram.com/p/C4MOFnbu44...

Yes, NSSR is an important chapter in The New School's history — and it's the one most press and supporters focus on. But the history is deeper, bigger, more disciplinarily diverse, and more ethically and operationally complicated than the "saving persecuted social scientists" narrative conveys

At NSSR: A comparison of two views: #SuzannedeBrunhoff, focusing on #money as the #universal#equivalent and the ex-post validation of private labors in circulation; #AugustoGraziani, focusing on #banking #financetoproduction and the ante-validation of #value production.

My decision experience was similar. NSSR pol sci MA -> PhD all while working full time. Couldn't have done that realistically elsewhere. Classes in the evening in walking distance from my office. Gained great academic org experience and foundational social science knowledge.
