Base-modified nucleotides mediate immune signaling in bacteria
Signaling from pathogen sensing to effector activation is a fundamental principle of cellular immunity. Whereas cyclic (oligo)nucleotides have emerged as key signaling molecules, the existence of othe...

12/ 'Terminator' is a sequence of DNA nucleotides, recognized by RNA polymerase as a signal to stop the synthesis of an RNA molecule and dissociate the transcriptional complex.

Tsoukalos: FOXP2 is a gene that was found in our nucleotides.
Reality: Like other genes, FOXP2 is made of nucleotides. That is, nucleotides are found in FOXP2, not the other way around. I’m being pedantic, of course, but we’re just getting started ... 3/n

1/New paper from Zheng Wu, Phong Nguyen et al. @cri-utsw.bsky.social shows how cells balance the two pathways that produce purine nucleotides: de novo purine biosynthesis (DNPB) and purine salvage. The surprising mechanism involves NUDT5, a Nudix hydrolase

NUDT5 regulates purine metabolism and thiopurine sensitivity by interacting with PPAT
Cells generate purine nucleotides through de novo purine biosynthesis (DNPB) and purine salvage. Purine salvage represses DNPB to prevent excessive purine nucleotide synthesis through mechanisms that ...

When purine-nucleotide levels are low, PPAT remains active, enabling cells to produce more nucleotides. But when these levels rise, the nucleotides themselves drive assembly of the PPAT–NUDT5 complex, inhibiting PPAT and shutting down further production.'

New "lab leak" documentary out. Producers hand @ayjchan.bsky.social the SARS2 genome on a giant sheet of paper so she can dramatically highlight 15 nucleotides coding for PRRAR (insert is only 12 nucleotides).
