Tove Jansson’s SUN CITY came from her fascination with retirement communities she saw in the US. This may be my favorite of her novels, partly because the setting of Florida and the mix of amnesia, conspiracy, ‘waiting for Jesus’, and alienation feels contemporary. Extraordinary. NYRB.

Sylvia Townsend Warner's aunt Purefoy was married to Arthur Machen, accounting for the Machen mood in Lolly Willowes & some of W's wonderful short stories, inc 'A Spirit Rises', with its curious rocking horse. On visits to Winterton AM would sit on Valentine Ackland's rocking horse while declaiming.

a novel that people don't talk about enough is Sun City by Tove Jansson.
